| Posted by ssurfer What are people using with their Android phones? I have a Garmin 265WT and used it all the time until I got my Droid X. Main reasons are I find the Garmin traffic data to be lacking to what I get on Google maps especially non major roads. Also why carry 2 device when one will do. However Google Nav does not have the flexibility to add Red light camera when I go to areas that has them. What are other folks using here on site? Beside Tom Tom and Garmin on their Android phones? |

| Posted by mikeman1485 Android When in a bind I use my android nav. I used to use co pilot . It works pretty well. You should be able to get the redlight kml or one of the csv's and convert it to KML so you can add it as a layer on your navigation using Extra POI Editor Googlemaps KML option (GPX POI Edit for GPS enthusiasts). |

| Posted by wolfmane Android app options I've tried a lot of different Android navigation apps and always end up going back to Google Maps & Navigation. You can download areas for Maps, so going out of data service isn't an issue if you plan ahead a little bit. Nothing else is as reliable and the search integration can't be beat for finding destinations. It is great for commuters, not quite so good for long trips because it does have to have a data connection. It does have cams as well as temporary obstacles such as traffic jams and accidents, and you can easily report problems for everybody else's benefit. I bought Navdroid years ago, which changed its name to Navdroyd, and just when it looked like it was going to grow into a really usable app it disappeared. Money down the drain. I bought TomTom apps for two different countries (no cameras available) a few months ago, and now TomTom is "retiring" those apps and introducing a new single app that lets you download any country map and traffic for free. Sound great? NOPE! First of all, they are not giving the new app to customers of the old app for free. Second, since nobody is dumb enough to pay for map or traffic subscriptions they've changed the business model so that now you have to pay a monthly subscription just to navigate! I don't know how this thievery got past Google, but I will never, EVER pay for another TomTom product. Garmin is ten times better anyway, but unfortunately they don't have an Android app yet. I'm currently using MapFactor Navigator. Like every other app that uses OSM maps, searching for destinations is problematic. It does give you the option to pay for TomTom maps, but they don't have coverage for my country. I like the interface and it works pretty well overall. I've found the best way to guarantee finding correct locations is to look them up on Google Maps beforehand, then browse the MapFactor map and manually add the destination as a favorite. I've been doing that for years with standalone nav units as well as apps. |

I got OSMAnd as well and use it on my phones and tablet. I like it because I can download topo as well as street maps for use off-line. When I have cell phone data available I usually use GoogleMaps. When I'm in the middle of nowhere without a cell phone signal I switch to OSMAnd with off-line maps. Or when traveling in Europe where data is really expensive I use OSMAnd and my pre-downloaded maps. Note that OSMAnd sometimes has some pretty good trail data on their topo style maps. Although it won't have all trails. So in the back country I find I'm often taking along a phone with OSMAnd, a Garmin Oregon 600, and now I've even got a Delorme InReach which I use for 2-way emergency communications. What I'd really like to do is figure out how to put a Garmin csv file into OSMAnd as a local POI file. I've got a campground list that I want to get in there but haven't quite figured out how to get from csv to obd. Anyone done that here? |
