Post Preparing .gpx files for use in Volvo Sensus satnav

Hi, I have recently purchased a Volvo V60 (2015 MY) with built-in Sensus navigation. The system allows you to add your own POI (recorded as "stored locations") in .gpx format. I have tried with a set of 200 addresses and can add the basic name/latitude/longitude data just fine, so that I can navigate to them or see them on the map..
However, when looking at any entry - or the standard Volvo POI data such as hotels - I can see there are fields available for phone numbers and website addresses. These connect with the Bluetooth phone capability and Internet connection in the car so you can e.g. call a hotel or look at its website. I have this information for my set of addresses in a .csv file, but cannot get the phone/web data into the right format to create a .gpx file in which this information appears. I have tried playing with various outputs, but really need some advice from someone who knows more about GPX or XML. Can anyone here help me?
Thanks, Julian.

Have you tried our GPX Editor? It should work: https://www.gps-data-team.com/convert.php

Hi Mark,
I swear by your tools and normally find them great, hence the infrequency of my posts for help! Unfortunately I can only get the tools to bring over the name, latitude & longitude, but not the other data. Cheers,
Julian.

Hi
Just to check this, when you go to: https://www.gps-data-team.com/convert/poiedit.php
and press the SAVE as a Garmin GPX file, it does not save the phone for that demo location (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
Is that correct?

Hi Mark,
Thanks for all your trouble. When I go to your MyPOI demo file, I can indeed save this as a Garmin GPX file and all the data shows correctly in each field, including the phone number. However, I can't get my data (stored in a csv file) to import correctly: the phone number ends up in the "desc" field. I don't want to populate each entry individually (I have 200 addresses); do you have a csv file laid out in such a way that the information will land correctly in the gpx file?
Cheers,
Julian.

Hi
This is already well described somewhere in our GPS Tools forum.
It works if you use this template:

1,1,"name","street","address","city","state","zip","country","(123) 456-7890"

You can omit most quotes, but the principle is the same.

I hope it helps

Thanks again, Mark, I have made some progress. When all the fields have data in them, I can now get the fields to fill out correctly with the phone number appearing in the right place. If the address fields are blank, however, I can't find a way of getting the phone number to 'jump ahead' to the right field, it lands in the first address field. Is there a way to force it to skip over the empty fields? I have tried various combinations of " " and , in the csv to no effect.
If there isn't an easy workaround, I can either edit the entries manually online before saving the gpx file or I can rebuild a bigger csv file with all the address fields filled out before opening it.
It will take a it more work but I think I can get there Then, of course, I have to test it in the car!
Off to bed now!
Julian.

Files without proper addresses or town names trigger our GIGO filter.

Yes, you can load a file like this:
1,1,"name",-,-,-,-,-,-,"(123) 456-7890"
if you don't have any additional details (address, city, etc.)

Hi Mark,
Thanks again, the use of the dash in the blank fields seems to have worked fine. I've also created two small files with a single entry and complete data for all fields so that I can see how the various combinations appear on screen in the car before I finalize the format of all 200 entries.
Off in the car now, more news tonight!
I really appreciate all your help,
Julian.

Hi again Mark,
I spent some time in the car today trying out the different permutations after re-initialising the complete system. Unfortunately, although the data eventually rendered perfectly on the site here (complete with phone numbers) and the XML validation check I ran went fine, I could only get the name, latitude & longitude to show in the car. There's also a small additional glitch in that accented characters were not imported correctly, although it is possible to add them when editing the entries within the Volvo system. So I still have a bit of cleaning-up to do, but that is a minor point.
My guess now is that Volvo have adapted the standard GPX schema and that used by Garmin with some extensions of their own. I think the only way to fix this will be to acquire the actual schema from Volvo and re-build my data to fit it. It's probably unreasonable to expect my dealer or Volvo customer service here in France to have this level of knowledge; my dealer didn't even know you could add your own stored locations! I also drew a blank with the very big Volvo owners' forum in the UK. So I think I will have to play my joker and contact Volvo in Sweden through their press office (I do some motoring writing and have a current press card).
If I do resolve this, I'll certainly post here again to help any other Volvo owners. In the meantime, Mark, thanks for your very quick and clear answers: you did everything to try and find a solution to this.
Julian.

Hi Mark,
The plot thickens. One of the Volvo owners on the UK forum helpfully suggested that I save one of the built-in POI in the Volvo system as a stored location, then export that as a gpx file to a USB key to see the format used. I successfully did this, taking a hotel with a phone number in the record. I can see the schema in a file viewer utility and have validated the XML schema. It looks as though some of the extensions are non-standard and specific to Volvo, as I surmised.
However, I can't get any of the tools here to convert the file to csv properly so that I can re-build my data in the right format. I only get the column headings for No, latitude & longitude. Can you see if you can generate a csv file from it? I can't see how to attach a file to a post here, but the complete gpx text is below. (or let me know how to reach you by e-mail.)
Cheers,
Julian.

Hi Julian,
That's the great example of investigative journalism. Andrew will implement this format tomorrow.
Thank you!

Hi Mark and Andrew,
And that is fantastic service if you are able to fix it like this! I know there are some Volvo owners in forums in the UK and the Netherlands who are keen to find a solution too. I will be sure to test it and share my findings here and on the Volvo forums. (I'll be travelling - without my Volvo - from Wednesday for a week, though.)
Best regards,
Julian.

Hi Julian,

This is the fast fix for your source file format. Andrew will play with this file format a bit more, to make it also available in our Public POI Zone, if there is any public demand.

1. Format your source CSV file using this templates:
Code:

3.1629171,46.9863191,name,>+telephone
3.1629172,46.9863192,name,address; city; state zip >+telephone
3.1629173,46.9863193,MERCURE NEVERS PONT DE LOIRE,Quai de Médine; Nevers >+(33)-(3)-86939386
3.1629174,46.9863194,MERCURE NEVERS PONT DE LOIRE,,Quai de Médine,Nevers,,12345,France,(33)-(3)-86939386,,
3.1629175,46.9863195,MERCURE NEVERS PONT DE LOIRE,,Quai de Médine,Nevers,state,zip,country,(33)-(3)-86939386,,

2. Load that file to our online POI Editor: https://www.gps-data-team.com/convert/

3. Select Volvo Sensus in the top right corner and press the SAVE button

You can omit address; city zip. ( ; is used as a delimiter)
You SHOULD put >+ in front of the phone number (historical feature as we made the first version for TomTom - they used that strange delimiter for phone numbers.

Please feel free to suggest any other improvement to this feature, if needed.

Hi,
Wow, that was quick! I think we are getting close.
I have tried converting two CSV files, both of which pass the XML validation test. The only difference I can see from the GPX file I exported from the Volvo is that in the phone number the brackets around the country and area codes have disappeared in your version. In the Volvo implementation, the number appears as +(33)-(3)-86939386, but in the output when converting the number from CSV into a new GPX with your tool I get 33-3-86939386 without the brackets. I made sure to include the leading >.
I think the Volvo system needs these in order to dial the number correctly from a mobile phone connected via Bluetooth, so the extended functionality would not work. Is this fixable? I'll hold back checking this in the car until you can clarify this.
Thanks again,
Julian.
