Garmin is offering free map updates to those, who register their devices from August onwards. If you purchased this device before but have not registered you will still be eligible, as explained here.
Garmin's City Navigator 2009 free upgrade is available to all Garmin fans who purchased a GPS that came with City Navigator on or after 1st May 2008. You need to create a myGarmin account and register your unit if you want to download this free upgrade.
Once when you download the map update run the downloaded software and follow the prompts.
I just spent 2 hours trying to work out why i cant download my free 2009 map update.
Seems something fishy going on: garmin nuvi 760 purchase date - 9th Aug 2008
yet according to my garmin: First Satellite Acquired - 19th Jan 2008
Wonder if thats why garmin will not let me download my free map upgrade when i'm entitled to it... Lucky i kept my receipts to prove purchase date. Thought I should post in case other users are having a similar problem.
I have just had the same experience with the Nuvi 760. Rang Garmin and advised of the problem. Once they confirmed the serial number and the registered details they reset my account and allowed the 2009 download. It would seem they are hoping people won't go to the trouble to question the issue and purchase the update.
What's up with that? Wonder what there up to promising something and not coming through...hmmm. After all the money one puts out for this stuff they could be a bit more abliging...!
I made the mistake of calling on a Monday morning, so my wait time was like 15 minutes, but once I had someone on they line, he was extremely friendly and helpful. He set me up with a free upgrade to the "point" release of the 2009 maps as well as a copy of the MapSource software.
I purchased my unit from Costco back in November, 2008.
I have my new 2009 maps from Garmin. I too had to ring Garmin Australia to confirm my serial No. No problems after that Garmin were great, I had my CD in a couple of days.
I bought my Garmin about a month ago and after finding the right data cable ( which I bought from Garmin) I had no problem downloading the maps at all.
A group of mates decided to join with me in a bulk purchase of the 760's and being slack, only decided to update the free maps a couple of weeks ago - then began the nightmare of having to supply copy of original Invoice, serial numbers etc and then wait for one week for the maps to be allocated to our four units. Initially I became increasingly frustrated with Garmin in Sydney, but the bloke I finally dealt with - "Ronnie" very patiently went through it all with me and assured me that the updated entitlements would be on my account by 5pm that day, and good to his word they were.... quodos for Ronnie, brickbats for the other Garmin employees I had to wait on hold for seemingly 30 minutes at a time for.
All I did to get the current maps was go to "My Garmin" web site and Download and install; Garmin_RMU_CNAUNT2009, MapInstall, InstallGarminCommunicatorPlugin_264 and POILoaderforWindows_253.
The first 2 where found on My Garmin and the other 2 where found on this site.
I found that I could install Maps 2009 again about 2 weeks ago. Problems with my GPS. You will need to register your unit with "My Garmin" and you will then have an account (password and user name).
Try this an let us now the outcome or if you have any problems.
