Hi! I have a Nuvi250 and I just bought a SD card to put Mexico maps on it. My computer reads the SD card alright but the Nuvi doesn't! I also have a Nuvi350 and it can read it's SD card just fine. Any ideas? I tried to download the Mexico maps (1.25 gig) on the Nuvi internal memory but it says it is too big...hence the SD card! Can I create more space on the Nuvi, paste the Mexico maps and foget about the SD card? Thanks for your help!

ok, I just put the card from the 350 into the 250 and...it doesn't recognize it either! Is there a problem with the 250 unit??

by the looks of things the 250 is playing up Could be the card capacity may be too big for the 250?

I would suspect the SD card and its compatibility with the Garmin. I had a 4 GB Sandisk card which would read elsewhere but not in my Nuvi. I realised after a while that the plastic body of the card was a little thinner than the others I had. I put a few layers of tape on thee back to thicken it up and it works fine now.

How do I transfer files from the SD card to my Nuvi 255W?
Have tried .GPX and GDB type files on two different brand SD cards. Figure I do not understand the process.

Hi all, don't know if this is relevant to your problem but I once copied mp3files onto a 8gb card at the computor and then put it into my nuvi 760 and it would not play. I removed the card, deleted all the files and put the card back into the nuvi and then copied all the files through the nuvi. Painfully slow to copy but worked well.

Hi

This had happened to me before and I would suggest trying another SD card.

Hi!
The SD card problem could be related to filenames.
For example, a 'gmapprom.img' file is only readable on the GPS unit, but if you copy it to the SD card, you have to rename it 'gmapsupp.img', and then the GPS unit can read it.

Try formatting the SD card before transferring any files to it.

I have spent ages trying to put my custom POIs on a new SD card for my Nuvi 250. Each time it said "no extras loaded". I eventually found a suggestion to format the SD card as FAT which I did last night and after reloading my POIs my Nuvi recognises the SD card and everything is now accessible on my sat nav.
There was a choice of FAT and FAT32 for the formatting but it seems the Nuvi 250 needs FAT.

One peculiarity with the Garmin navigators, is that the brand of SD terjetas can influence the recognition thereof by the GPS. The brand seems to be more like the Garmin is the SanDisk.

Have used various brands of sd cards and providing you use what Garmin recommend for the particular card, there is few problems.

Ditto for the Garmin Nuvi 42. It required the SD card to be formatted to "FAT" before it would be recognised by the unit.
The file I used is a "gmapsupp.img" image file and I stored it in a folder created on the SD card called "Garmin" to allow the unit to recognise it.

It's the partitioning of the SD Card!!!
I struggled for days with my Garmin and different SD cards from all brands, qualities, speeds, specs.
Finally I found out that SD cards must be very strictly partitioned: you must have only 1 PRIMARY PARTITION on the card. Several tools on windows like Windows' disk management tool and MiniTool's Partition Editor create nested partitions... phones and gps devices can't open those.

How I found this out is when I got home and tried to manipulate some map images. Linux saved my day and now I can navigate american maps with a european Nuvi.
So the tip here is: try to see if your SD card has been partitioned to have EXTENDED partitions or LOGICAL partitions. IF that's the case you need to delete them, create a primary partition, format it to FAT32, and re-copy your maps.

Before you go renaming files, formatting SD cards, etc. have you tried selecting the desired map in the Map Info screen of your GPS settings? You need to tick the box for the map that is on the SD card.
