After downloading nu-maps Europe lifetime maps to my Nuvi 250w my device shows the following message:
"No detailed maps found that support routing. The Nuvi cannot be used without them."
Can anyone help please.

I guess that there could be any number of faults, but the most likely, apart from a corrupted download, is not installing exactly as per Garmins instructions for installing the file. This WILL involve shutting the unit down when told and then restarting it.
If you haven't had to do this then I would suggest reading how to install the software and reinstalling it. I haven't had any problems installing new basemaps.

When you put new map into you unit, do you activate it yet? If not, you should do it.
Format the SD card. Not a quick format, a full format (fat32). Restart the computer, reinsert the SD card, restart Garmin express and if not prompted to install the map update, ask to reinstall the last map update.
