Phasing out of GPS Car Devices

Store employees at Best Buy says the Car GPS is in the past. People will be using there cell phones now for GPS use. I have doubts. Any comments?

Mobiles as GPS

It's currently illegal (in my state, at least) to use a hand held device as a GPS. It must be in a cradle or fitted to the dashboard of the vehicle.
So unless people are prepared to buy a cradle for their mobile they risk fines.
Cheers,
:D

mobiles as gps

Highly doubt it, as I have latest HTC Desire phone and is a pain in the bum to use as gps compared to actually using a dedicated GPS.
Screen is too small and keyboard (on screen) difficult to use even when stationary, compared to a Garmin 765.

Phone in a cradle is legal

As far as i know, as long as the phone is in a cradle it is legal, I could be wrong, but it is not illegal to have a phone in the car just use it by holding it, so as long as everything was set-up before driving there should be no problems.

GPS's are going the way of the horse shoe

I have a 5" phone and find the software just as good as a dedicated GPS, but much cheaper like some are $0, they might night be quite as quick as a garmin Ect. but I for one am not buying another GPS, and I have a holder for the phone that is attached to the screen, so all being equell I woud sell and shares you have in garman, tomtom or the others

The reason I am asking is that I recently bought a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, which I was surprised to learn does NOT have a GPS system. I thought that would have to be a must for me and when I told the salesman that he said that he believed installed GPS systems were on the way out because they cost so much to update all the time. He seemed to think people would be relying more on their phones for their GPS. I have doubts, too.
