It's currently illegal (in my state, at least) to use a hand held device as a GPS. It must be in a cradle or fitted to the dashboard of the vehicle.
So unless people are prepared to buy a cradle for their mobile they risk fines.

Highly doubt it, as I have latest HTC Desire phone and is a pain in the bum to use as gps compared to actually using a dedicated GPS.
Screen is too small and keyboard (on screen) difficult to use even when stationary, compared to a Garmin 765.

Obviously phone/gps/mobiles will be the way of the future...everyone wants a totally integrated device that can fit into your pocket...
Garmin are now releasing their very own gps phones as well to keep to the competition.

The only people that will use the big / bulky gps devices now are taxi drivers and commercial people.

99% consumers will all have iphones and nokias htc phones with inbuilt gps...

The end is logical.

I agree, but have my doubts. GPS will remain on the market, but I'm sure sales will, if they haven't already, greatly decrease. Best Buy, Target, Walmart & other retailers will track the demand of these goods to justify the necessary supply (economics 101). Taxis, buses, UPS, Fed Ex, limousine services, Staples delivery, Supermarket delivery, Crystal Rock (water), etc will continue to use/need GPS and these businesses will most likely buy them in bulk for discounted pricing.

Hands free phone usage is mandatory in most states and will be nationwide in a matter of time. Since cell/mobile phone manufacturer's are aware of these mandations, they will make & sell optional equipment to help the customer(s) keep within state regulation. I have a car dock for my Droid X that does this for me. Of course there will be those of us (including myself, at times) Rolling Eyes who are capable of using their phones "under the radar" so the cops won't see it. BUT these phones are a distraction from driving and should be used as safely as possible to avoid causing or getting into an accident.

Just my $.02...

Many do. I had opted to modify the garmin mount to hold my Droid X. And it still holds the garman unit albit more snugly.

I very much doubt this will happen soon, what would be the motivator behind it other than cost?

In Japan most GPS systems also double up as a TV with digital signal so you can sit and watch the baseball at lunch time in your car, should you want to.
This single factor alone (the TV functions) would basically put the manufacturers at a disadvantage if they suddenly stopped including them in their cars.

I dont think it will happen any time soon, even if your phone can basically do the same thing.

Post Hand-held GPS vs in-car GPS - it's a matter of convenience

1. Legislation to ban the use of hand-held devices in motor vehicles in Victoria, Australia is relatively recent and in a country like Australia legislation of this nature spreads quickly to other jurisdictions. So it is unlikely that hand held devices will replace more traditional GPS devices here at least, in the near future, based on that aspect alone.

2. It's an inconvenience to place the hand-held device in a cradle every time it is required in the vehicle and to remove and replace it there when it's necessary to leave the vehicle even for a refuel or other short stop where the communication feature of the device (such as phone) may still be required at hand.

3. As indicated above the scale of the screen on a hand-held device limits the amount of information that can be displayed in a readable manner and may also discourage users from considering it a universal device.

4. In-car (built-in) GPS devices are an important selling feature in many new vehicles and with the promotion still given to GPS devices whether in-car of in hand-held devices, it is likely to remain an important feature for promotion by vehicle manufacturers for some time to come.

5. Portable DVD and Blu-Ray devices have not displaced the home theatre any more than computers and laptops with TV receivers have replaced the home TV.

It's all about convenience and function and in my view people are well able to cope with the two formats and will continue to do so untill we lose our desire to own stuff of convenience.

How would you convince the police that you were using your "phone" as a GPS.
Don't think I would be stupid enough to try it out, way toooooooooooo costly.

I feel there are times when the app on your phone would come in handy but it is at the end of the day firstly designed as a phone.

A GPS is designed for that purpose but the phones are keeping the GPs prices honest

Post Grain of Salt

Take what the people at best buy say with a very large grain of salt. They are instructed to just sell. I think the cell phone industry needs to come a long way before beating out car gps. most of the default navigation require an active data connection to download map data whereas your gps does not. Also the gps tends to be a little quicker to acquire the satellites.

Looking into my Crystal ball the product that will suffer from lack of sales will be the Handheld or Portable GPS.

Integrated GPS Units in vehicles are quickly becoming a "standard" feature as full featured in-dash units are increasing in popularity.

Many in-dash units now have all of the following features
Stereo
Reversing Camera
GPS
DVD and/or Blu-Ray
Television
Bluetooth

With the either existing or proposed laws covering the use of a Handheld device, these in-dash units will increase in popularity. Which I believe will result in the decline of the traditional handheld or portable GPS units.

The GPS industry is clearly seeing lower sales with the advent of all the map Apps for smartphones, but I think GPS will survive. If you need to use your phone you will not be able to follow or listen to voice guided directions from whatever App you're using on the phone.

It's a pain in the a$$ when following the phones GPS and then someone calls you. You get one choice or the other - listen to GPS or answer the call. I have a GPS and will keep it, in addition to Google Maps on my Droid X2. Both serve their own purpose, yet each offers its own features and has its own value.

Totally agree, but each to their own I suppose.
My HTC Desire phone on full brightness is still too dull to see on the dashboard in sunlight, and not in the same league as the Garmin GPS.
Only time I would use it that way, is if on foot in a city and not having to strain my eyes whilst driving.

Maybe we are all going to get new eyes as well to see the screens if they drop GPS standard systems and we all go to phones. I can't read my phone screen now let alone when use and see it when driving
