GPS: Garmin Navigator

I am new here so I hope I am within the forum guidelines with this post.

I purchased a new 2017 Honda CR-V EX-L with Garmin Navigator satellite navigation on 12-26-2016. I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to figure out how to put custom poi's into the system and you just can't do it. I have called both Honda and Garmin and all they did was point fingers at each other and say it can't be done.

I have had two Harley's that both had on board Garmin Nav's and they could do it through USB as well as several Garmin portable units and you can do custom poi's with those as well.

What a waste.

If anyone has different information about this topic I would appreciate it.

I made some progress on this issue but it isn't painless. The custom POI files need to put into the Garmin/Poi folder. Then, the GarminDevices.xml file needs to be modified in place on the USB key. Two places in the xml file must be changed. A datatype must be defined and an updatefile must be defined. They are under MassStoragemode in the xml file.

There already is 1 datatype and 1 updatefile defined in the xml file for the dealer database. I just copied the two instances in the file and pasted them below each of places the dealer database definitions are located. There must be two definitions for each Poi added. Additionally you must makeup your own part number in the updatefile for which point to the location of your Poi file.

Here is the caveat, the POI's do not appear in a place where you can select them directly. You must go into categories and do a search for the POI you need. I have a POI for a hotel in Virginia that I frequently stay at on bicycle trips. Searches for this POI by hotel name resulted in no hits prior to updating the maps following Honda's process. I then modified the xml as described above, updated the maps, and then did a category search. Bang there was my destination.

This is progress but still short of my goal. I want the Poi's to appear as Custom POI's as they do on Nuvi devices. I suspect that Honda/Garmin are using a different directory structure in the unit. I am also looking for a way to upload the Poi's with out doing a complete map update.

Lastly, there is an SD Card slot somewhere in the vehicle but I can't find it. spent an hour or so today looking for it.

P.S. - Don't copy and modify the GarminDevices.xml file somewhere else and put it back on the USB key. If you do Garmin Express will no longer recognize it as a valid device.

More to come!

Hi
Please let me know if we can make this process any faster or easier on our side (POI file structure).

Mark,

I have it working but there are issues. The POIs are not accessible by going to Categories/Custom POIs and then tapping your way to folder structure that is built for Custom POIs. For instance I have mine setup as shown below. I can search in any of the search boxes for Virginia Capital Trail and the search results show the destinations that match the first part of my search. I can then tap a destination and Navigation starts.

Virginia Capital Trail
----Virginia Capital Trail 100 Main St Parking <--Destination
----Virginia Capital Trail 110 Main St Parking <--Destination
----Virginia Capital Trail 120 Main St Parking <--Destination
----Virginia Capital Trail 130 Main St Parking <--Destination

Here are the issues and they lead me to cease any further efforts until I at least fix the first one:

1. There is now way to delete the POIs that are uploaded. This is a big issue with untold consequence
2. There is no way to tap your way to Custom POIs
3. I don't know the consequences for my actions and I don't want to be held liable. I probably have said too much in the first place

Well, I fixed issue #1 above. A map update must be performed using an unmodified GarminDevice.xml file with no pointers to additional custom POI files. Doing that deletes the custom POI files. I did my search for Virginia Capital Trail as I did in the post above and got the same results. I then did the update. After that I ran the same search and got no results.

So, the answer to the "How to do Custom POIs" can be it can be done with caveat that you can't tap your way to them like so many of the Garmin portable units and several manufacturers such as 2016-yyyy Motorcycles and Honda motorcycles. I know how to do it on Harley's but i need to investigate Honda motorcycle's and their process for custom POI uploads. The Honda bikes may provide some clues on how to do. If their process works, if there is one, then great.

In regards to #3 above, I just can't share this process exactly because doing so could cause me liability problems should something go wrong.

It is really a shame that Honda will not provide the information and process to do this especially with the release of the 2017 CR-V which is truly an awesome vehicle especially when you to the upper end of the EX-L with Garmin Navigator. Price one out and you will find all kinds of new technology such as Lane Keep Assistance, Driver attention Monitoring, front end collision protection, automatic headlight high beam activation/deactivation, other technology advanced functions, the Garmin Navigator navigation, and a turbo engine.

My new 2018 Garmin can't get me anywhere. It doesn't know cities, takes long detours and tells me to get off the highway to save 1 min. of travel time. It totally doesn't work. What do I do?
For example, if I put in an address for Cape May NJ, it could not find Cape May NJ.
I tried again with Deptford NJ. Could not locate Deptford NJ

Do I take it to Garmin or Honda?
