Hi all
Just tried to update to the above map on my Nuvi 245, which has a 8GB SDHC card fitted, using Garmin Express. Garmin Express (GE) tells me there isn't enough space on the device, which I know because I have the North America map lower 49 states, installed on the device. GE directs me to install onto an SD card, but when I try to do so GE tells me there is insufficient space on the card and use one that has more than 4GB of space! I have tried reformatting the 8GB SD card (Fat32) and also installing a 16GB SD card but GE still tells me that there is insufficient space on the SD card. Please help!

I'd read some of the posts you listed but I couldn't find the answer to my problems and they have now just got worse!
I've now tried a 4GB Sandisk class 2, an 8GB Sandisk Class 2, an 8GB unbranded Class 2, a 16GB Samsung Class 6 card, all with the same problem. I've tried formatting the cards in FAT, FAT32 and NTFS, with no change in the outcome.
So, and here is the new problem, I decided to try just installing the parts of the Europe map I need (UK and Ireland) with an 8GB Class 2 card installed into the Nuvi. GE was happy with this and completed the install. Then I checked the files. The SD card is still empty. . . . . . the UK and Ireland map appears to have OVERWRITTEN MY NORTH AMERICA MAP!!!!!!!!!!
Can I recover this now?
I know it was a year out of date, but I'm sure it would have been good enough for my 2 week holiday next month.
It's not right! It shouldn't do that. Would be good if I can help. I believe the next step would be to call Garmin: https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/2183.html You may need just a new/replacement unit.
As someone wrote, have a big coffee mug ready and use a cord phone rather than a cordless (it can run out of battery).
Good luck.
I've just been wondering, do you know if my trouble could be due to formatting the cards on a PC rather than using the Nuvi to do it? That is, if the Nuvi CAN format SD cards?
The cards I've been trying (other than the first one I used) have all been used in other devices and formatted on a PC before inserting in the Nuvi.

Format is the most basic operation done by the operating system. Nuvi can't do it. PC format should be just fine. The problem is with your firmware (nuvi operating software) that does unexpected things, in addition to Garmin's maps & data protection features (nuisances).

I think I am now sorted, after about 11 hours on this, including FOUR calls to Garmin and an email!
Thought I would feed back what i have discovered in case it helps anyone in the future. Firstly the basics:-
* Micro SD cards should be formatted FAT32
* A Nuvi 245 is only recommended by Garmin for SD cards up to 8GB
* The browser of (Garmin's) choice is Firefox.
I'd definitely recommend (if you have more than one map) to install them on different SD cards, so you don't overwrite one with an update of the other (like I did).
My North America map download had expired but fortunately Garmin seem to have taken pity on me and provided me with a new 2015 download. . . FOR FREE!!! I had to download this via their website, as it wasn't an option on Garmin Express. To download via their website (using Firefox) you need to install some "communicators" "plug-ins" and "add-ons". I have no idea what these are all about but most pop-up when you need them (you have to click the "ALLOW" boxes as they appear. This then allowed me to download the North America map onto an SD card, by following the instructions on the screen.
Now for the Europe map for which I had lifetime updates. Garmin support told me to use Garmin Express. Firstly, check you have the latest version, (I didn't). To do so, open GE and click on the gear wheel at the top right and click on Check For Updates to Express and it will tell you if you have the latest version.
Once the latest version was installed, I followed the instructions to update my map. It told me there wasn't enough space on the device. I selected to install on an SD card (a different one to my North America card) but it told me "Card could not be found".
After another call to Garmin and trying another two cards they suggested I download MapInstall and use that instead.
Once installed, when you open the program, there is a drop down box that gives you the option of where you want to store the map (it defaults to the Garmin internal memory). I selected my SD card instead and then on the next screen you have a world map which allows you to put a box around, or click areas you want to install (as long as you have the correct purchases to do so).
This has finally allowed me to install the Europe map onto an SD card and is 40% complete as I type. . . .
I bought my Garmin Nuvi 3590 back in 2012. I always seem to have problems updating my North American Maps on my Nuvi 3590. I either get the insufficient space message (when I have plenty of space) or the download fails halfway through. Happens all the time and on multiple computers. Takes me several attempts to get the update completed. This is why I only update my maps once a year just so I can avoid the aggravation as much as possible. I love my Nuvi 3590 but this is definitely the last PND GPS product I will ever purchase.
I bought Nuvi 3590 lmt from GPS4you. Unit came posted from America with USA Maps which I do not want and can't update as UK Maps on SD card and not installed on unit!
Very dodgy company who don't answer their phone
