Gotta say that (being human) and having nearly every licence class on my licence, including class 1, lack of concentration or missing a badly sighted speed limit sign, my GPS has on one occasion saved me from being over the speed limit mometarily.

I have 2595 LMT

I can't understand why they would not put the over the speed limit audible adjustable option on it.
I think the only thing good about it is the map updates. It's useless in City driving in a lot of areas it has to recalculate its self in signal percentage. The voice activation is deaf over even the quietest engines you have to shout at it.

There are some other brands on the market that have over the speed limit alert. The silly thing about Garmin is that when the signposting on the GPS changes to read to show you that your over the speed limit its really useless because it's very small and many people that where spectacles for driving cannot see it and there is no way that it's a safety feature if people start looking at the GPS all the time rather than watching the road. Next time when buying a GPS I would go to a place like Harvey Norman and ask them which GPS has that option. If they can't tell you they shouldn't be in the business of selling GPSs . Hope everything works out for you.

PS. With as many people writing comments about this subject, if I owned the Garmin Company, I would have done something about trying to rectify a dangerous feature on their GPSs.

Robert,
Where have you seen Garmin advertise the speed warning display as a "safety feature", as you claim ?
Would have thought that your speedo was the better option for keeping an eye on your speed as it is in front of your face and not off to the side etc.

Have you emailed Garmin to request an audible warning ?

I would also suggest that it may not be included is that a speeds are changed very frequently and you could be miss-informed by the GPS or not informed at all due to a speed change and then everyone would be trying to blame Garmin or any other manufacturer for then being fined.
Time to get real and leave the phones and other electronics alone and be responsible for your own driving habits.

I have a Nuvi 2797 and the speed shows up in red when it exceeds the speed limit. Whilst an audible alert could be a good feature, it could also drive you crazy every time the speed limit is exceeded by 1km/hr or more.
Unless you have cruise control on, it is hard to hold your speed exactly on the speed limit. Fluctuations of 1-2 km/hr are not unreasonable, so if you are trying to sit at 1km/hr under the limit it is possible that the alert would be going off all the time for as little as 1km/hr over the limit. Maybe this is Garmin's rationale for not having the audible feature.

Post On Speed Limit Alerts/Audible Warning Signal of Garmin Nuvi

On Speed Limit Alerts and Audible Warning Signal.

I've several Garmin NĂ¼vi models, and all SHOW the SPEED LIMIT ICON which applies to the stretch I'm riding on and all turn visibly RED as warning as soon as I exceed the Speed Limit.
However, it's only on the 2445LM and 54LM, that I also have the AUDIBLE SIGNAL WARNING when exceeding the speed limit.

On the 42LM, I find the setting "Proximity Points" / Garmin Safety Cameras/ Audio / Choose "single tone" or "continuous tone" (but NOT the setting "OFF" as mentioned above) and this 42LM DOESN'T GIVE a audible speed limit exceeding warning (although I would like it to do, hence my visit to this forum!).

The 255W - as do as well the 42 LM, 54LM and 2445LM - only gives audible warning as soon as I enter into a zone known for having "Safety Camera" (nice euphemism for 'traffic fine/ticket distrubutor', isn't ? ...).

Concerning the 42LM - for which I'm most interested in also activate the audible safety alert - I don't find any setting relative to the so-called Locale or Country (which is discussed above).

And I do agree in general that it would be interesting for the audible speed limit exceeding alerts (that do already function on my 2445LM and 54LM), being able to set it to e.g. a % or a fixed speed range above the Speed Limit, would be interesting (for now, the audible alert is indeed triggered as soon as you exceed the speed limit with 1km/H).

The problem is, we are looking down at the speedo worried about going over speed limit rather than looking out the window at the road

My old Magellan had the audible warning, and it was very helpful. You could set it for 10 or 15 mph over the speed limit and it the audible tone was very helpful. It's easy to lose track of your speed when following accelerating cars or talking to a passenger and losing concentration on your speedometer. Garmin should have that option. I bought the 2797 for the better features, and didn't expect to lose one. Confused

Think it is about time the vehicle manufacturers were made to instal that feature ALL motor vehicles that have GPS systems as well as those that do not.
Don't see why it should be GPS and mapping company's to warn you of speeding. You set it to what the limit is and drive accordingly.

Garmin does not include the audible alert. I have always been a Garmin user so I bought 2-3490's assuming they did. I am returning them and buying 2-Tom Tom's. The Tom Tom do have an audible alert. GARMIN needs to (excuse the pun) get up to speed.

I have the same issue here, speed changes to red on over speed ,what numskull would think, a user would not want an audible alert. Oh wait, that would be Garmin. Does not matter what I say to them, they just are not interested to change.

I've got a Garmin 2597lmt when I exceed the speed limit all it does is show little red bars on the sides. What good is that! If anyone could tell/help me find a device that shows how fast your going / the posted speed limit/ and a audible voice prompt, all of them that you can adjust to what you want. You would think Garmin would have that as a option, as to if you want to use it or not. Not so you can speed but more of a guide. To help you in places your not sure what the posted speed limit is

++++++ I would not consider it as laziness. Convenience - is the name to use. Audible signal lets the driver not to be distracted from driving by checking the speedometer or GPS for speed. Before Garmin, about 3-4 years ago, I had Navigon 7200t. It has all very convenient features. I got rid of it since German company went out of N American market and no updates and service was available.

I noticed that the speed limit things comes on an off. When it is off, the unit does not alert you that you may be over the speed limit. I wonder why it goes off. It should stay on and change with the zones.

I've a Garmin 2598lmthd. It shows the speed I am driving, the posted speed limit for that road and audible voice prompt when I exceed the speed limit.

I think at the end of the day it all comes down to convenience vs safety. My Nuvi 2589LMT does an excellent job of warning me when I'm about to go over, but it doesn't bug me at the same time.
