Post How to overwrite default POI Alert SOUND?

I have a Nuvi 510 which is a Nuvi 200 made waterproof....and then the price quadrupled....sigh.

I use it on my motorcycle and the audio comes through my helmet via bluetooth. Problem is the quick "bing-bong" of POI speed cameras is too short to activate the bluetooth. So I get NO audio warning.

I don't want to add new POIs as the ones I have are fine. I just need to change the audio alert.

Any ideas?

When you use POI loader to load the entries into the GPS, there is an option as to the distance that you wish to be warned prior to the alert.
Select the one that suits your purpose and all should be ok...

But I'm not using the loader since the POI are already in my GPS. I just need to change the alert sound only.

I'm guessing I could copy the POIs that are already in my unit and then RE-install them using the loader and then choosing the alert sound. But I don't know how to do that.

And it seems like there should be an easier way.

You will have to make a sound file that you wish to use (one you can hear) and save it in the format of .wav or .mp3 depending as to which file format your GPS uses. Then it has to have the exact same name as the file it is used with but with the sound extension.
i.e Red_light_ahead.wav or Red_Light_Ahead.mp3
to match the file Red_Light_Ahead.gpx

Then load it with POI loader.

Don't think that will work as things like Red_Light_Ahead.gpx are inside the .gpi files. And I can't see inside the .gpi files as they are already installed on my GPS. So I can't match the .wav file to the names inside the .gpi files since I can't see them.

I tried using this sites converter tools....and they either say the files are empty (they give one location for 0,0000 0,00000) or they don't work at all.

But I'm willing to try again.

Don't try to edit anything, just make the sound file as stated, AND, you then load it all via POI Loader. That is what the loader does, converts all the files and extensions into one file called POI.gpi and that is what is actually loaded to your GPS. Easy as.. Very Happy

Tried it. Got the message "There are no Data files in that folder. Please specify a folder that contains at least one .csv or gpx extension."

So not so "Easy as..."

But thanks for trying to help.

Post Odd that no one knows how to do this...

I copied the POI file from my Nuvi to my desktop. It's filled with GPI files. I tried to upload that BACK into my Nuvi using the POI loader thinking that I could then chose a custom sound file during that process. It won't even take the GPI files.....it asks for GPX or CSV files.

So I'm new to this....but it seems I need to extract the GPX/CSV files from my stock GPI files.....then upload them back into my Nuvi with the new custom sound file.

Now how do I do this? Or is there a better way?

For every poi there are at least 2 files, 3 if you have a sound file.
either GPX or CSV for the data file, BMP for the display file, AND, WAV or MP3 for the sound file.
All have to have the exact same filename but with the required extension.
When they are loaded via POI loader, it converts all files in that directory to a file called POI.gpi, and that is what goes to the GPS.

Everything on the GPS (poi's) is in this file. One file only.
The GPS then reads this file (poi.gpi) and displays the individual poi when near it depending as to what distance you set the warning in POI loader prior to loading them.

Thanks for explaining it so clearly. So it seems like I can't extract the original BMP and GPX files from the GPI files.......but is there any way to fix my problem?

OK.
1. Make a directory on your computer called POI
2. Put all your downloaded POI's into that directory.
3. Put POI Loader and a program called SOX.exe in the same directory;
(sox.exe can be found on this site by search)
4. When you have ALL files required I.E. .GPX, BMP, WAV or MP3,
(they all must have the same name but different extension)
then you use poi loader to load the files to the gps.

Please Note: POI loader combines ALL your poi files in that directory into ONE file ONLY, then loads that file, poi.gpi to the GPS.
