Post Garmin .rar error

First attempt: Garmin files are downloaded as .rar files. When I try to open these in WinRAR I get an error message saying that the file is corrupt or cannot be opened by WinRAR. I have tried with .bmp, .gpx and .wav.
Any suggestions?
