How do I set my routing to stay on the interstate? i.e. when going from Chicago to Columbus, Shortest and fastest was on the state roads through every little town. Traffic wise easier to go I90-I65-I70. I could not get Nuvi to recognize the interstate route.

To be honest, I would just continue driving on the interstate. The GPS would recalculate and adjust time arrival, etc.
