Hi

I've just bought the Garmin - it is taking hours to update maps. Is this normal? I stopped it a couple of times blaming he computer for running slow but now I'm not so sure it is the computer.

All other downloads (GPI POI file updates) are much faster. Even my ancient GPS was quicker (till it was dropped on the floor and broke...)

What speed is your Internet connection? Some of the map updates are very large and will be slow on a slower connection, plus there may be others downloading at the same time.
Time doesn't matter as long as you eventually get the whole update ok.

The map datafile, for the Europe map, is now about 2.5 Gb which does take some time to download and also over an hour to install. I have a Nuvi 265W, and it takes about 4 hours total for a full up-date.

It is good to check what internet speed you have first. If high speed, the server sometimes costs low speed because of some technical reason.
But mostly, speed of internet is key reason.

I just updated a Garmin Nuvi 50 and it took 26 minutes to download plus a few minutes to install. I think the "bottleneck" is your internet connection.
Note, however, that the 1340 LMT may have a larger file to download, so it may take longer.

Sometimes (depending on internet connection speed, time of day) the process could be very long.
I suggest you, if time elapsing seems to be exaggerate, to stop and restart the download
(last Garmin European map update was 3 hour download!)

You have problems with your internet provider if it takes that long. May pay to try another provider.

Well is it the computer?
Do a mirror download of a file to check pout the computer performance.
You neglected to mention the type of connection.
Obviously if you are on dial-up there will be ridiculous download times, but on fast broadband it should be only around 3-5 minutes max. for a VERY large file.

The computer will not be the problem. It will instal the downloaded files way faster than any download speed available today.
It has to be the speed of the internet connection.

What a waste of time. I am in 9th hour of downloading and upgrading my Garmin GPS. Info states 1 minute to go. I have been on hold for that minute for almost an hour!!!!

As I have read, no it is not my computer. I have had larger downloads in many times faster. This is a Garmin issue!!!!

Pete, you are right it's not your computer and it's not your internet connection. It is Garmin software!! I have three devices and all of them take hours to update, even having the maps downloaded. It is the update itself of the devices. The USB speed I'm seeing for the nûvi 260W is just 92.5 KB/s!!

Post older units seem slow on USB

I have a 265W and am getting a transfer speed of 480 KB/second on a file that is already on my computer. Wonder if anyone has had success with a different cable or if some of these older 2010-2012 units are just plain slow with any usb transfer.

Has anyone contacted Garmin re the problem ??
I have had minor problems in the past and it only took an email to their support section to get a quick reply.
