disabling the voice ~ but keeping proximity alerts

For a 1490t ~ I would like to be able to disable the voice giving directions whilst still having proximity 'bings' for POI road safety alerts.

The voices seem to comprise of a .sum file and a .vpm file. I've been wondering whether I can create dummy .sum and .vpm file with nothing in them; if I then 'choose' that language it will leave me with no voice ~ but the proximity alerts.

Guidance on this would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.

I worked out how to do it; downloaded Garmin Voice Studio and instead of recoding my voice, I recorded nothing; just silence. I then downloaded the new file to my 1490t. It's worked to an extent. Unfortunately I think Voice Studio sensed a low recording level and upped it automatically. This has resulted in what I'd wanted to be silence being a loud white noise hiss.

Still, on the right track. Next I tried to import a silent WAV file created on Audacity into Voice Studio. I thought that would do the trick and, in theory, I think I was on the right track. Unfortunately, attempting to do that crashed Voice Studio and it now won't work.

Works the same in the 765 nuvi, defaults to the 'bong' tone

You missed the point: the idea is to keep the bong, that is the default POI alert, and mute all other voice prompts. That is why he (or she) is attempting to modify a VPM file by replace all existing voice prompts with a "mute" WAV file.

It's strange that Voice Studio is crashing. I'm no expert of VS, but I would guess that it's doing some spectral analysis on the file and failing miserably in this case.

I like the approach: blank prompts. To bypass VS problems I can suggest either:

a) A low volume constant pitch sound, that will not disturb much.
b) If volume is an issue for VS, a high frequency sound, above human hearing capability (like those that only kids can hear but on a even higher frequence). This file can be of "normal volume" (normal power) and may avoid VS crash.

The Garmin Nuvi 3790T has the facility of being able to choose a voice that does not speak the Street Names. All you have to do is choose such a voice and you will not get the streets announced. I am not sure whether other models do this.

Silencing the voice

Just done this for my Nuvi 1210.

Dowload the nonTTS voice editor. Then copy a voice file from the garmin that doesn't speak street names. English_American_.vpm for example. If you pick one that speaks the street names then you can zap all of the commands and it'll still say street names. Weird but fun.

Use the Voice editor to break apart the file into individual .wav files. Then use audacity to load the files in (I did this 20 at a time). Listen to each file, if it's a voice then hilight the waveform then click generate > silence and you'll see a straight line. Click export as .wav file and save each file with the same name to a new directory. The files that contain blips and bleeps just save the file to the new directory without editing.

Go back to Voice editor and use it to recombine the files in the new directory to make a new .vpm file. Rename this file exactly the same as the one you are going to use such as English_American_.vpm and copy it back to the voices directory of the Garmin. That way you have silent navigation and blips for speedcams and POI's. I now have the silent voice for when my wife is in the car, and can switch to the spoken street names when I'm at work.

Hi to all,

Im also trying to disable the voice but keep proximity alerts. I tryed to creat a silent file with voice studio but it turns into white noise on the Garmin when aproaching the new direction. I tried also to import a silent wav file created on audacity and the voice studio does not recognize the file even using using 16 bit raw PCM audio sampled at 44 kHz.

Help would be very apriciated.

GPS: Zumo 550 & Nuvi 765

ZUMO 550 Turning OFF Audible Tones in R.L.C. POIs

I realize this topic is old. However before I start a new topic I hope someone may be monitoring this. I am using a ZUMO 550. My recent Red Light Camera POIs satarted giving me audible tone warnings in addition to the "Red Light Camera Ahead" .MP3 warning. The Bong Bong is so much louder than any other sounds or voices in the Zumo it is deafening. I have attention tones in the Zumo turned off. How do I eliminate the Attention Tones for the Red Light Camera POIs? Thank You. PeterF
