Hi all,

just picked up a Garmin 3790T and found right away that the unit gets extremely hot especially on the right hand side of the back of the unit, where the battery is located, I presume. Any of your units also get this hot?

Also my screen capture button can it be re located away from the top right hand side of the screen where it blocks the battery level meter?

Hi
Depends what you mean by hot...which could range from normal to a problem requiring a return.
My 3790t gets quite warm, especially when using at home on the desk transferring files.
Obviously it is designed to sit on the stand with air free to circulate...not flat on a desk.
I believe any problem in first 10 (14?) days entitles you to a changeover rather than a repair.
Best to take it to the shop for an opinion.

I have noticed this too but I have been unsure whether it is the unit or the fact that I live in Arizona and it's over 100 degrees every day now. I will say that even after driving for a substantial amount of time with A/C running etc the unit will still feel very hot. I have gotten in the habit of taking it off the dash when parked just to protect it from the sun. I hope that's enough ....

Initially the unit got VERY hot, eg hold it and the right hand side would be around 60Celcius. Now after a week or so the battery has fully charged and the heat has subsided but not by much maybe down to 40Celcius. I guess the processing power, battery charging circuit and the thin case makes it hard to dissapate the generated heat, however for a 500 dollar 'top of the line' Garmin unit I would not expect this issue.
Other than this the unit is fantastic to use, the fastest so far I've used and some cool nerdy extras.

Mine runs hot, must just be the way they build it without proper ventilation. It only runs hot when on the mounting system.

Hi
Garmin has a known overheating issue (some Nuvi and many factory-installed car GPS units).
See here: https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/4956.html

Give them a call, contact Garmin or NHTSA's vehicle safety hot line at 888-327-4236

Post high temperature when in cradle

This unit, so far, is not part of any recall according to my comms with Garmin.
Yesterday drove for a few hours and checked the temperature, still very hot.
This can not be good in the long run for the battery, the LCD screen and the plastics inside the unit. I spoke to Garmin twice about this but they still say it is normal. One representative said he had one himself and noticed the abnormal heat also. The other rep blamed the heat from outside the vehicle!
Like I said before, I love this unit, it is fast and works as advertised. However this temperature thing is not good and reflects a poor design, poor component choices and overall poor quality control on behalf of Garmin manufacturing.

Post 3790T double failure! personal recommendation DO NOT BUY!

Both my 3790T's have failed.
One unit now has a continuous 'satellite aquiring' message and battery wont charge in dock whilst connected to power.
Other unit will lock up during navigation, causing inoperability untill battery is discharged or unit connected to computer.

Both units get extremely hot while connected to cradle in vehicle.
I believe the extreme heat weakens the solder joints on the surface mounted components weakening or breaking the contacts to them.
These units should all be recalled and either replaced with brand new fixed units or monies refunded in full. Will Garmin extend it's warranty on these units from 12 months to at least 2 or 3 years for those infrequent users of this item.

Garmin - all the great features of this unit are overshadowed by this heat/charging/battery problem causing said product to FAIL. Your product quality assurance team on this product should be all sacked for not picking up on this issue becoming a problem for users and hence the Garmin Company.

My personal recommendation to anyone looking at this 3790 or 3790T model is upgraded from "buy if you live in a cold climate" to D O N O T B U Y!

Post 3790T very hot indeed

Yesterday, I took a longer drive than usual with my Garmin 3790T. Half way through the drive, I got a black screen. I had to press the ON/OFF button to get it working again. Anyway, while doing so, I note that the garmin was really hot. I believe cdmacomm is right. Though this GPS works very well, the very hot situation would render the unit with lots of trouble with frequent use. Not good at all. I have also advised all my mates not to bother upgrading to the 3790T until they fix this heating problem.

Hi all,

Ok , got both units replaced within a week so good service there.

Have noticed a dramatic reduction in heat generation whilst docked in the car and navigating.
However this comes at a cost of speed. These new units are nowhere near as fast as the 'originals' eg. takes MUCH longer to search for satellites, slower to calculate routes etc. Also one of the new units tends to error with "lost satellite reception" while the other, placed in close proximity, does not.
I am not sure if the orginals were cpu programmed too fast or the replacements have been 'detuned'.

Can't but think that spending 1000 bucks on 2 of these gave me a heap of trouble I did not expect to buy into.

I recently bought a 3790t in Germany and didn't expirence any temperature problems but my impression is that the recalculation of the routes is VERY slow. After you changed your device how long it take until you get a new route direction in the city?

Hi,
one unit is 'lost' a lot and needs to re calculate often ( I will be returning it tomorrow ) this unit also shows a speed of between 4 km/hr to 8 km/hr when standing still.
My other replacement unit works ok but slow. When switching on in the morning whilst driving it can take up to 5 minutes to be ready to use. My old C320 works within 20 seconds. Recalculations whilst driving at 60/70km is nearly impossible to use.

The more I use this thing the more I dont like it.

GARMIN PLEASE FIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
