I find the Garmin POIs at this site to be quite accurate. I just wish that my Garmin has better voice volume.

Post Modify the WAV files

Some of the Nuvis are just too quiet, I think when Garmin has stuffed too many options inside they just use smaller speakers.

https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/2258.html explains how to modify voice files and as part of the process you are converting the to WAV format. You could use a program like Audacity (free sound file editor, a bit of a learning curve) to boost the overall volume level in the WAV files, then resave them.

That would result in a louder "voice", limited only by how far you can push the volume in the .WAV file itself. Often not far, sometimes far enough.

If your model has an FM transmitter, you can play sounds through you car stereo system, and control volume through the radio.

Post Newer 5" sets have higher volumes

If you are really keen on better volume, the newer 5" GPS 1490t has atleast 30% more volume than the older 4.3" models. Garmin has been able to put bigger speaker due to the more real estate availble. This may not help you since you have already made the purchase, but may be useful for others who consider volume to be an important factor.

The StreetPilot models have two speakers which makes them significantly louder.

Also, if you have an FM Transmitter in your Garmin, you can transmit to your car stereo for more volume.

Finally, if your Garmin has bluetooth, you can purchase an external bluetooth speaker (originally intended to be used for handsfree cell phone conversations), which can be linked with your Garmin and usually will have a much louder speaker than the one built into the sat unit. I have found that there are plenty of battery powered models that clip to the sun visor and so are out of the way.

Enjoy,

The older garmin sets are poor in audio. My newer 1460 nuvi has great audio and kudos to garmin for improving the much needed audio. My advise is for all who needs good audio to upgrade to the 14xx series nuvis.

It's difficult to find a gps unit that can listen to navigation instruction thru' the bluetooth. The 765 is one and that's the reason why I purchased it, and additionally you can also use a wired headset as an alternative. This is good for motorist who usually have their music on and when you have passengers in the car talking, it's easy to miss the instruction on the gps. However, the battery seems to drain much faster whenever your use the bluetooth headset. Also, I'd encountered occassional audio dropout. I've yet to use a wired headset, and I will try it out one day and compare the audio quality with the bluetooth headset.

I used to use an external speaker with the Streetpilot 3 and sound was very good compared to the internal speaker. The 765 I have now also has a good internal speaker and plenty of volume to spare.

I've found that putting the volume past 40% on my 1490T causes the speaker to distort.
