If your maps get too old, eventually your device will start warning you that you should update.

In Australia it is Sensis, and I have found that the map updates each 3 months are very close to being accurate for altered or changed roads.

I disagree.

I think the Sensis maps are not up to standard, especially if you travel outside the eastern states.

We traveled through West Australia, between Mount Magnet and Leinster, and found the map on our Nuvi showed we were traveling in the middle of nowhere. The road showed only on a few occasions, and then it was still next to where the map showed. This road had been redone 12 years previously.

Also, traveled through a forest in NSW and all the little tracks in there were accurate. We did use the navigator to find our way as we had no maps of the area, but had a very nice trip through the forest.

We also had a Android pad which had a GPS with Copilot live installed. This was accurate but a bit hard to fit in the car as it is a 10 inch screen and takes up a lot of dashboard space.

Also not happy with the recall service. Garmin recalled our Nuvi 260w and replaced it with a Nuvi 255w which is not in production anymore. I paid originally $400 and they replaced it with a $150 one

I send Garmin a few emails with my gripes and grizzles but they never replied. NOT HAPPY, GARMIN!

How often should the maps be updated?

Garmin emailed me 11/2011 that a Map Update is available. NOTE: This Update Expires 11/23/11. I don't believe it's a good idea to pay for the "lifetime" update ($75, I think) since Garmin updates the Maps 3 or 4 times a year and there is NO Cost for this. Why pay Garmin more $ for a "lifetime update" when 3 or 4 times a year they are free (I think they're offered quarterly). There was also an available Software Update earlier in November.

Hopefully you signed up at Garmin's web site

Once you do you will be able to easily access these sites

Are you sure that it's not just your Garmin product that includes these free updates c764?
My old Garmin, now used by my son, certainly did not include any free updates. whereas, my current unit, a 1340T, was supposed to include upto 4 free map updates per year. however, i wasn't able to register the unit within an allotted period, due to not having a windows machine at the time, so i have ended up having to pay for the "free" updates.

The "free" map updates were / are model specific and an add on at purchase times when retailers were chasing sales.
There are a lot of models sold without the "free" map updates, and, if you have one of these (as I do) the lifetime map updates are a cost saving buy if you are going to keep the GPS for a length of time.
If you are a tech savvy person that updates your equipment regularly, just get a new GPS with the lifetime maps included.

From my experience with Garmin the past 2 years, it appears that 'release' updates quarterly. I don't see the point to pay Garmin $79 or $89 (or whatever their fees is) for "unlimited updates" when they come out, to what I have determined, quarterly. Their last update was November 2011 so I'd expect the next one to be in Feb or March.

The techs at Garmin are very helpful & you can always call them if your issues can't be resolved. Be patient though, sometimes I've waited on hold for 20-30 minutes. Here's their contact info: https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/2183.html

Much cheaper to pay for the Lifetime updates than pay a fee quarterly.
The lifetime is about double the quarterly update, so at that rate of 4 updates per year you would be paying double in the first year alone, Confused

I'm not sure if/why my Nuvi 265W that I purchased 07/2010 would have any special benefits - i.e. free updates - than other models. I thought all Garmin's got this, but I don't ask much about my unit now that the manufacturer's warranty has expired (or Garmin at all now that smart phones are offering the same service).

Perhaps I am wrong about what I said, I'm just speaking of my personal experience(s) with Garmin and my particular device. Fortunately I got a user name.ID the day after I bought it and have had good success since. Try to get yourself a name/ID at garmin and see if that works for you. I don't believe an allotted period would apply since I'm still getting these updates (most recently 1/28/12). You, or I in this case, get emails from Garmin periodically when an update is available. This includes map updates as well as software updates.

Check it out, whataya got to lose...

Sorry if my words were not clear or if I was misunderstood. The Garmin updates that are available quarterly are FREE. They email me when an update is available (Maps or Software). Then I connect my 265W to my computer, go to Garmin.com, sign in and get the updates (that are free).

My apology again if I was misunderstood or didn't make sense Embarassed

There seems to be some confusion re "free updates".
There are at varing times and by dealer specific sales, lifetime map updates that are given with specific GPS models, NOT ALL Garmin models.

If you did not get a GPS with the lifetime updates included at purchase time, (as per my Nuvi 765) you have to pay for the lifetime map updates, and the same updates come out approx. every 3 months.
From memory, the lifetime updates came out not long after the Nuvi 765 release and we missed out on the freebees. Crying or Very sad

Why does the My Garmin/My Dashboard keep...insisting on wanting to update my map despite currently having the most up to date version i.e. - City Navigator Australia & NZ NT 2012.30-Sensis,Map+JV(S), Sept 11?

I've even tried allowing Garmin to have silent access to my GPS to try and let them see that my maps are fully up to date and working just fine.

This Garmin mob can be a real pain when they seem to get stuck in a loop on something!

For information my Software Updates are currently up-to-date and have a green tick.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers Pablo

If only they were not so expensive. My maps are way out of date but can't bring myself to but new ones. Might just buy a new GPS, one that comes with maps for life or something. The other alternative I suppose is to just use my phone

If your maps are that far out of date, so is the GPS, and your thoughts re buying a new GPS WITH the lifetime updates is the correct one.
The quarterly updates may only be minor but can be very beneficial if they apply to your area of travel.

Definately would not use a phone as a GPS in the car as the laws regarding mobiles in cars/ vehicles, are becoming more stringent and fines increasing dramatically, and rightly so.
