Garmin licensing/payment is on an individual unit basis. You have 2 units, whether the same model or not = 2 licences/payments.

So if you own two different models, (1490T & 765T), and have two different licenses can you update both units with one download or do you have to do two separate downloads? I'm in the middle of nowhere and have a Satellite connection with limited bandwidth and will have to do the updates at my son-in-laws house.

Going by my own experience, if the units take the identical map sets, then one download should do it. I just did 2 separate update downloads for my Nuvi 5000 + Nuvi 1350 and I found that the 2 downloaded files were identical. The second download actually replaced the first one. The licensing comes in when you update the actual GPS. That is where it checks for the licensing/activation codes.

For example, I have the European mapset downloaded and licensed/activated on my 5000. A couple days ago, I used the Mapsource software to transfer the maps to the 1350. They transferred just fine, but will not display. The unit requests activation of the mapset - thus, I'll have to pay (to activate/license) if I also want it on the 1350. That's in keeping with what I said in my original post at the beginning of this thread.

Each lifetime map is electronically attached to the serial number on the unit and only gives that unit the ability to obtain a new map or update because each lifetime map is an individual license.

Greetings,
Yes you are restricted to the one unit for lifetime updates of that particular nominated unit.
Replacement of the unit negates the lifetime upgrade.
I still think it is a worthwhile investment and Garmin notifying me when there is an update available is a bonus.

Hello,

You will be required to purchase a lifetime download seperately for each of your two devices.

Of course its way better to buy unit with lifetime map updater (LM), it cheaper and comfortable, no doubt about it.

I have purchased two Nuvi 3597 and found that the update is tied to the individual unit. I had no problems though updating both through Express as per the instructions from Garmin.

As with all software updates, the vendor is going to want to prevent updates being applied without licensing for each unit being confirmed.

Good advise here. Keep in mind that Lifetime Maps are for one unit only. When that unit dies the Lifetime Maps die with it. -JEP-

Garmin lifetime updates is not lifetime. I have a Garmin Street Pilot and I have a lifetime map update .They will not let me update my maps anymore. They came out with a new program (Garmin Express) and it does not let me update anymore.
