New at this. I have a tomtom one XL and a blackberry. Is it better to use data plan on my phone as a GPS or my tomtom one?

I honestly think using Wi Fi makes lots of difference as it allows one to download larger amounts of data.

... the short answer is it depends.

I've found that I can get up to 700kbit/sec with a tethered iPhone4 when out and about in certain areas. At home I typically get a few 2-300kbit/sec but this is a function of multiple hops between my PC, AP, Router, Cable Modem etc....

Your phone will charge you a per packet download if you go over your allocated monthly Limit if your using a tethered blackberry for example.
Your tom tom wont.

Wifi on the other hand is... free Smile

Post ...ooops missed the question

The answer is ... it depends on the wifi signal or strength... or conversely your mobile signal strength.
Both work on a p2p system, but Im guessing your phone will be faster.

it depends on the speed and congestion of said wifi with a 3G device you get abou 700kbps most wifi will have atleast 1.1Mbps I have however seen some wifi painfully slower than a 3G data connection

In general WIFI should be faster but it will all depend on signal strength and how many other users are on the WIFI. Public WIFI in service stations or places like Starbucks or McDonalds can become very crowded, especially when there is no cost and can therefore be slow.

3G is generally slower especially if you don't have full strength signal. The other thing to look out for when downloading large files on a weak 3G signal is that the connection may well time out as the phone will cut the connection to save on battery and save your data plan.

Wifi is definitely faster than 3G, even with strong 3G signal. But you may not notice much of a difference with a strong 3G signal. Also, 4G is pretty fast too.

I agree that 4G definitely offers a speed boost although it is yet to arrive in many countries. WIFI is generally the best option though even against 4G.
