A question for the programmers out there.
Is the warning written into the POI data or is it in the GPS program ?
If it is in the POI data it should be easy for someone with programming knowledge, to write the voice bit into the POI data file, then add an overspeed MP3 or WAV file to suit.

An oral alert would be fine provided the speed limits in a gps unit match the posted road speeds. Often they are not and when they do not match you will get a lot of false warnings. In a city such as Sydney its not unusual for speed limits to change very often. Even minor road works involve putting up signs to reduce the road speed. No one can anticipate this least of all the map suppliers. For road speed rely on your eyes for the posted speed limit/s rather than what a gps might indicate.

I have a Navigon 5100. It can set alarm say 5mph above the speed limit. If you drive around that 5mph limit, the voice alarm can be triggered often and can be quite annoying.

I have the 3790 and yes it flashes Red when you are over the speed limit, according to the GPS.

In my Car, on long trips, I set the Overspeed function (Ford Falcon XR6) at 115 for 110 signposted Highways or 105 for 100 Highways, for the Audio overspeed alert. Still, it would be better if the GPS did it, as it would work all speed limit areas.

My Nuvi 855 doesn't appear to have any over-speed warning at all. Nothing flashes in red. At least the GPS Data Team road safety cameras have an audible and visual warning.

They have a over speed warning on the other GPS software that says (YOU ARE OVER THE SPEED LIMIT)..which does get a little on your nerves after a while ..but yes I think Garmin should include it on there software and at least give you the option to have it active or not.

I have just updated my old Tom Tom with a Nuvi 3790T and find I am wondering if I made a mistake. Advice was the Garmin is the pick of the crop and while so far it seems ok, I miss the user configuration available on the Tom Tom, like the audible beep when over speed. The main problem with TT was the alarm was a preset number. The Nuvi overspeed red alert works but I did notice one stretch that reported 80k for a few kilometres when it was posted 70, and has been for many years. Hmmm... Sad Could be a trap if relying on it too much, and also being visual you have to take your eyes off the road to check the small icons so it really defeats the purpose of having it in the first place I think. With access to a site like this it certainly increases the value.

I try to respect the speed limit but I often go a few mph above it and it would drive me nuts to hear a voice reminding me each time that I am going above the posted speed limit!

I do have a warning on my 1490T in the form of my actual speed colored in red when I go above the speed limit but it is not always easy to read.

Instead I would prefer a verbal warning that i could set say at 5mph or 8 mph over the actual speed limit. In this way, it would really be useful to get my attention and bring me back to the speed limit.

A point to remember, speed limits do get changed quiet often and your GPS will not know about it, so you still HAVE to watch for speed signs.

My Nuvi 2360LT now has an audible overspeed warning. It flashes red, and has a ding. The problem is, it does it when you are 1km over the speed limit. So it is very annoying, and there is no where to change the buffer, or even turn it off!! It's only started happening since the latest update.

Nope, had it once but the over-speed alert tone has disappeared in the current updates!

Confused
