I currently have a 1390T but I believe my comments below will apply to the entire 13XX and 14XX family of Nuvis...

(1) I must say that I simply hate the fact that you cannot see any POIs on the screen at a normal zoom level, but I have accepted this for now, and this is not what I want to focus on here.

(2) Although I do not consider myself totally retarded, I found the process of using the POI loader quite convoluted and the need for constant inspecting, understanding and modifying various POI files overly complicated. It is simply not user friendly at all, especially when you compare it to TomTom.

(3) The number of custom POIs available for Canada is quite low, and their quality/ accuracy of location seems terrible. The practical ability to search for them, while driving, is also questionable.

(4) When approaching a rest area, a TomTom will tell me something like "Rest Area in 500 m, next rest area in 145 kms". Is something like that even possible with the Nuvis?

(5) I have tried installing some red light/speed camera alers, but all I was able to get is a narrow dark oval shape in the middle of the screen, obstructing the view quite heavily and containing text in very small, hard to read font. I can also get some "bing" sounds, either single, or repeated, depending on what I put in my Settings. However, despite repeated trying, I was NOTable to achieve any of the following, which some of the forum members indicate is generally possible for Garmins:

- Proper, recorded, or computer generated warnings (i.e. "Speed camera ahead")
- A flashing/red upper bar on the display
- A large icons on the screen when approaching a camera

Are all of the above really possible on, say Nuvi 1390T?

Is there really no user friendly software that would allow me to automate the process of including various file types, setting proximity alarms, checking icons, choosing sound files, etc?

Rest area on Garmins are plain old POI. This feature is not available.

The reason why you get an "oval" is because you have not provided BMP icon file to the POI Loader. You don't get the voice warning because you have not provided the MP3 file to the loader. With the 1390T, Garmin changed the way the messages are displayed. You get a "floating bubble" on the screen.

You can download Nuvi POI files here: http://poi.gps-data-team.com/

You need to place the CSV file, BMP icon file and MP3 audio file in the same directory. The base name of these files must be the same for the POI Loader to match them up. You have have different CSV, BMP and MP3 files in the same directory.

You give me hope Smile Thx for your comments.

If you say it is posible with these Nuvi series, I will try again. I did get new sound files and BMP icons, named them accordingly, and thought I did everthing more or less as you descibe, but apparently not... Well, mahcines are generally not stupid, so... Well, I will try one more time.

The floating "bubble" is really ugly ...
