Hi,
Don't know if this is old news, but I recently purchased map update software for life of unit. In other words, one fee of $190.00 and you can download maps as they are updated (usually every 3 months) at no extra charge, for the life of your unit- That's the same price as purchasing updates for 2 years.
This also means that any errors Garmin become aware of will be corrected, released and you can download the updated maps.
Log into My Garmin. Looks a great deal to me.

Cool...

1. These days your get new GPS with latest maps for free, as a gift when you buy new set of tyres,
2. You can already buy new GPS with new maps under $100.00,
3. In 2-3 years good brand new solar powered GPS with new maps and updates will cost under $50.00,
4. The map update service does not transfer to another unit.

It's OK if you want to keep your loved old unit with for many years. Do you...?

Navman also offers 3 years of free maps for My Series GPS. I remember not beeing able to update my old Navman iCN 10 months after purchase (discontinued unit, maps and product support).

My Nuvi 260 keeps reminding me to update my maps recently.
I'm also inclined to buy a current model GPS at 170 bucks as opposed to spending 190 bucks just on an update.

Just to annoy every other GPS maker on this planet, Google provides Android GPS maps for free. GPS on Android phones is a cool experience.
You won't even have to pay for map updates again.

Three years is a long time in the world of GPS. It's better to buy a new GPS than to buy map updates for an old GPS unit.
It is probably more cost effective to buy a new GPS in a year or two to get brand new GPS device, warranty, latest software and maps.

I love my NUVI 260w
It's been awesome

But with the newer units having lane choices, 3D, etc having to pay for a lifetime of map updates or a newer unit, its a tough decision Confused

Garmin's offer of free map updates now ends 31 January 2011. I am sure, given the competition, that other offers will follow.

Navteq has worked well for me on my Droid V. Do you think this program could be copied to and SD card and then work on a Garmin 265WT? Or would this be a conflict of interest where "file sharing" is not allowed?

I still get free map updates and direction speed camera updates and its over 5 years old.

You cannot fail to see and hear warning sounds Voice no silly bong bong or small picture my new nuvi 3490 gives me.

I went in to a city (Norwich UK) and it never gave me any Traffic, junction pictures or lane assist on any junction at all which was the reason I brought the Garmin

I am thinking of sending my 3490 back and keeping my snooper it does more than the Garmin

The problem i found with the Android app is that you need to have data switched on.
Unless you have a large or unlimited amount of data allowance it can be very costly, especially when travelling in other countries
I've been using Nuvi which is free of charge, you can download and install the maps and it works fine without using up any data.

I agree garybutler, Andriod GPS maps are only in an emergency case.
Truck or car GPS navigator, updated, will do the hard work, that is its finality. Arrow
