Post Loading POIs onto Nuvi

I have read many of the posts relating to this procedure and I am now well aware that ALL of the personal POIs I wish to have on my Garmin must be loaded from the same directory in one go as all of the POIs that were there will be overwritten.

However there is still one point I wish to clarify.

There are basically two classes of POIs - (i) those that came with 660, preloaded by Garmin and (ii) the POIs that I have loaded myself.

When I load new POIs will the preloaded POIs (i) be overwritten as well those (ii) that I loaded earlier?

What you are loading using POI Loader is Custom POI's, they should not overide the Garmin POI's. You do not have to load all of your POI's in one go. What I have done is split my POI's into their own categories such as Caravan Parks, Camps, Cameras etc, I then use POI Loder to load 1 category first then rename the file poi.gpi to caravan parks.gpi and so on, until I have loaded all of the POI's that I want.
This way if you need to amend any category you only have to reload that category.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that info.

I am quite and experienced users of computers and laptops and I have had a TT for around 5 years so I have some idea how sat navs work.

However a few days ago I went over to a Nuvi 660 as, amongst other things, I had access to maps for New Zealand.

The problem I have is simply the way in which POIs are stored on the 660.

I am now ell aware that any POI file loaded by the POILoader overwrites the file being written to. What I was not aware was the fact that you could rename the POI file and thus have more than one.

One further point that I need clearing up is how I can append POIs to a file on the 660 that has been mofified after loading onto the 660.

Consider

1. I load a file to the 660 which I rename as campsites.gpi
2. In the course of time add extra sites to it.
3. I then get some extra sites from, say, the web and I wish to append these sites to the campsites, gpi.

I first need to extract campsites.gpi from the 660 and convert it back to a gpx and bmp file (or several files). I then add the new gpx file to the list before loading the combined list of files back onto the 660. Finally I need to rename the poi.gpi to campsites.gpi.

So how do I extract the gpi file and convert it back to gpx and bmp files?

First, you can convert GPI file using the GPI editor.

Second, you can simply add new POIs to your local PC POI folder, as explained here. Use POI Loader to create new POI.GPI file, rename it and copy to your Nuvi.

Hope this helps

I've never attempted to do it that way.

I've always been content to maintain a folder with good descpritive directory names and just load using the standard Garmin POI Loader software.
