Yes one can encounter free Wi Fi out and about but, if security is your cup of a tea be very weiri connecting...I am speaking out of experience.

After just coming back from Europe, just about every McDonalds had WiFi that I could pick up with my iPhone sitting in the car parked next to the shop.
Was a fantastic way to be able to use Skype and make cheap calls with Macca's free WiFi. Also great for downloading emails etc.
