Hi,
Most times the cars own speedo is 8-10 KMS out because car manufactors do this so people think they are average of say 110kms but this is to show the KMS lTRS PER 100KMS IS EXCELLENT but it is only say 103kms in real truth. Your GPS unit is most accurate on the satellite reading and average. Also the tyre size is important to rotation to the speedo reading as your car data plate shows the only allowed tyre size to the vehicle program data. Real matter of this is the GPS is most accurate and above information is correct as car makes try to cover up to impress the speed to fuel used.

Wayne

My 1390 is always out by 5kms. I have also noticed wrong speed zones as well. Was in a 100km zone and Garmin showed it as a 60km zone....go figure.

Sorry to disagree Wayne, but that statement is wrong. Here in Australia the laws on motor vehicle regulations state that the maximum error in speed display is 10% error.
You will find that most vehicles within the last 10 years are very close to true speed readings.
I have a Honda and a Toyota, and both are only 1 klm/ per hour out, measured against the GPS, with factory fitted tyres at correct tyre air pressures.

If your speedo is that much out at say 60kph I would guess that you have changed tyre sizing, and if not, I would speak to the regulators re your problem.

Re the original post re speed zone differences, I will do what I should have done earlier, and send off an email to Garmin and get the correct answer, as I stated that I "thought" it was a POI error and may be incorrect.
Will post the manufacturers answer when received.

The gps can't be out as it locks to satellites.

I think your 1390 is probably more accurate than the car speedo. When on a highway, I set my cruise control to the 1390.

As for the speed zone, I believe that the speed information is embedded in the map. Here in Melbourne, I don't trust the speed limit on the map. It is better to be alert to lookout for the speed limit sign.

I thought it must be the (Garmin City Navigator 2010) map for the same reason. Even with an empty POI file, the speed limits still display.

My 760 is definitely getting the speed indication on the lhs above the media player from the map because I deleted all my poi files by accident and I was still getting the speed indicator.

I agree the car speedo should be reasonably accurate with the original tyres. I've recently changed my tyres and the car speedo is now reading about 5kms above the GPS speed.

If I remember correctly the speed symbol appeared with City Navigator 2009 and later maps.

So it is not a POI feature, although you can get alerts based on your speed and a speed in a POI file such as the 40KMH school zone files, which unfortunatley can't be referenced to the time of day.

Agree. Just deleted all POI's just to check and speed limit still appears in L/H lower corner where available.
Also agree, DO NOT trust all limits displayed as they get changed OR moved, and it will not be a point of argument with the police if you get caught.

My understanding is the speed indicators are contained within the map software, however I often observe changes, as local authorities will change limits between times of map updates.
I use the speed indicators as a guide only.
Regular map updates can assist, but at the end of the day, it is the driver's responsibility.

I have the same problem. I found that with the changes to the speed limits the maps and poi haven't caught up yet. I always check the speed limit sign just in case. Cheers Tom

I think the speed limit comes from the map because its a feature that was there before I installed any POI's. Its also a feature they promote. It also displays speed limits for highways and Interstates.
