In the Garmin you can have different POI (GPI) files, I have a separate GPI file for each group, but they must have different file names.

GPI POI's load into a sub directory called POI under the Garmin directory to prevent them being deleted with other POI updates.

I only "load" or update the one I wish to as some do not change often.

Using explorer you can look at the file structure in the Garmin and the directory called POI contains the GPI files that contain one or many poi groups.

GPX or CSV files can be used to feed the poi loader and the .CSV are easily viewable on your PC to verify/change data.

Thanks. Even a Numbnut like me got his query answered four years after the thread went live.
I had some custom POIs to upload and eventually did so but could not find them when I went on to POI on the device as a test run. This forum said to look in Extras and there they were. Amazing the help one can get off the web.
thanks to everyone.
Now to find out why some uploaded and some did not. Back next month!!

Post Proximity Alert gpx file

OK, think I'm getting it. If I download the filename.gpx I just get it indicated on my map and found/listed when I choose a category. If I use the second .gpx file listed for the POIs (with proximity), I get an alert.
Someone said to download the second gpx file all the time. I did that, but now I think I screwed up. I SHOULD have only downloaded the proximity gpx file for the speed/stoplight cameras but the regular gpx for the gasoline stations, accommodations, etc. I DON'T want the stupid proximity alert to sound to sound if I just drive by a hotel or Esso station! Duh, have to download all them again! (Am I correct?) Crying or Very sad

Hi, you can use the manual POI Loader's option to ignore proximity info for selected files.

I think you misread the intention it was "Garmin GPX or Garmin POI CSV or Garmin POI GPX or .Garmin POI CSV" the author was just stating their preference of which one you chose

Garmin POI BMP is the ICON

Garmin POI CSV is basic name only, but easily edited in a spreadsheet.

Garmin POI GPX is the industry standard and is feature rich,

Garmin upload direct puts the POI file in GPI format straight to your GPS.

Garmin POI Custom POI with extended info includes Name and Address fields

Garmin GPX (proximity alert, phone dial, etc.) allows you to custom set the alert distance and separate phone number field

Post Downloading POIs.

I am a Newbie, owner of a Garmin 65LTM. I have two questions re downloading accommodation files and other POI files:
1) is it better to download the .gpx file or the one with proximity alerts, phone numbers etc?
2) how can I download the whole country rather than each state?

Hi linghams

1. All our POI files (CSV, GPX or GPI files) contain the same information.
You can set up proximity alerts with GPX files, but I would recommend that feature for our Road Safety POIs only.
2. Our GPI files (one-click-updates) are released at a country level. They have built in proximity alerts for Road Safety POIs.
