What files must be copied to another disk in order to backup all personalized files in case of repair?

Copy everything     
Personally, I would copy everything under the /garmin folder just in case.

I have done that for all my GPSes including handhelds. It saves me having to re-install all my maps as well. However, if Garmin gives you a new GPS, you will still need to reinstall the maps with new unlock codes.

I backup all folders and files under Garmin.

back up experience     
Yes... we have to back up all of them to the garmin folder in your computer. I have experience, lost all of my data in nuvi 760, fortunately saved by my copy data in my computer.

So in case of major data loss, is it OK to move the entire contents of the back up back to the Garmin. Or just some select files.

I'm wondering if there is an OS of sorts or is everything stand alone.

Map resource     
The file of gmapsupp.img or gmappro.img under Garman folder is most important for map supporting.

Nuvi WT 285     
Mine removed all data/addresses I've entered by hand. I'm afraid to move my Garmin folder over because somehow it left my downloaded files.

It's always worth keeping a backup of all Garmin files on a DVD or a USB disc drive IMHO

How I Lost My Data     
I'm told that the loss of data may have been caused by holding the lower right of the screen as I turned it on. There's evidently some sort of re-set function that I may have triggered.

For some reason my Garmin came without instructions included, and I had never heard of this in talking to anyone else. I have a 285 WT Nuvie.

What you are describing is the maintenance mode. It does not automatically delete all data, it provides you will a menu of actions you can take. You have to conscienously deleting the user data.

Total backup and restore     
Hi,

I had a problem with my maps (the latest voices were very strange and no-one at Garmin was available to help at the time - and I thought it could have been the voices I installed from the Garmin site) so after I retrieved all my tracks and such with MapSource and then saved them I used Windows Explorer to copy all my Zumo folders to my portable (I always have 'view hidden' enabled in Explorer) and then deleted the Garmin directory.

Then I recreated the Garmin directory and copied GarminDevice.xml back into the directory and ran WebUpdater.

This put everything I wanted back on the Zumo except the maps but I had the download file for the latest maps on my machine (remember they are unavailable from 'My Maps' on the Garmin site shortly after you buy them so make sure you have a copy before you delete anything) and then after I ran this I them had a functioning Zumo with the right maps but the voices were still wrong - but a web update a few weeks later fixed 99% of that.

So you can completely clean up a Zumo as long as you save the GarminDevice.xml file as it has everything you need to identify your Zumo.

Of course YMMV but this worked 100% for me and when I spoke to Garmin they were going to suggest this process.

Backing up map and POI files     
On my NUVI 650 I can back up my maps and poi's to my hard drive and CD using a card reader Sony makes a nice one that fits in a 3.5 in drive slot.

I have a garmin nuvi 265wt, I didn't know you could back it up. Could you tell me what I would need to do because I'm not sure how to back it up.
