Can someone tell me how I get my Nuvi 710 to show the speed limits on the roads?

I also ask the same question.
I have installed the speed limit alert, 100, 70, 80, but it doesn't work.

Anybody can tell us how to install it properly?

I also thought there was a way to alert me of my speed being a preset amount above the posted limit with my Garmin 885T.

I like the fact that it displays it in the lower left corner. But in unfamiliar areas it seems speed limits change for no reason to an unreasonably low speed like 55 mph to 30 mph for only 200' and then return for now discernable reason back to 55 mph. I would love to get a 1000' warning of a speed limit drop so I can be made aware of it without having to watch for that sometimes obscured solitary sign.

I would like it to do an audible alert like (Tone Tone) "you are over posted limit" or "Speed reduction ahead" 30 mph.

Possibly a selectable option of a speed alert of an over the posted limit POI @ 3 mph, 5 mph, 8 mph 10 mph etc. Then 100', 500', 1000' distance selections.

Can this be done? Is it already available for USA maps? I do understand that the liabilities are likely why Garmin did not put this feature in. I only hope someone can find a way to get a POI to function as a speed alert.

While the above functionalities are pie in the sky any type of speed alert POI would be greatly appreciated.

Ken, when you get the speed warning files, make sure you get the .gpx files from the bottom of selection list, AND, on the right hand side there is a selection of how much warning you want the file to include, 100m is too little notice if travelling at 100-110 kph and suggest trying 300m warning.
If you go too far out the GPS beeps its head off and becomes annoying.

Johmazz2006, thanks for your reply
I was looking for an alert that notified me that my road speed is over the posted limit. My GPS has the posted limit in the lower left corner. I just wanted a warning of when I'm exceeding that posted limit by a preset amount (3-4 mph) either because the speed limit dropped or my speed increased.

I don't find any speed warning file in the road safety section.
I find speed traps, red light cameras and speed camera alerts at various speeds. Am I looking in the wrong area?

Thanks Ken

I don't think there is such a file Ken, they only warn you as to where a speed ZONE starts and you can use the download section as download the file with as much warning as you select, i.e 100 m, 500, 1000m etc

Mine warns you at the start of the pre determined warning limit and beeps at given distances up to the point that the new speed zone starts.
You still have to keep an eye on the speedo.
That may be an added feature on future model no doubt as things change as fast as computers do.

If the maps has the speed limit, the Nuvi should display it (if Available) without you doing any thing. Most Major roads in the US has this data, also these data isn't available in Canada as of yet.

I hope this helps, Thx.

I haven't tried it yet, but you can manually select distance before warning, (which is what I use) OR, speed, when downloading file.
May be worth atry to see what happens.

believe it might be an automatic function of the newer maps released this year as updating my older 680 provided the speeds as well.

My speed limit on the unit is different from the posted speed limit in some areas, can I get the updated list anywhere?

Just did a return trip 5600 klm's, and noticed that the 765 flashed a RED warning on screen when over the limit posted on the screen.
Note, not all roads have speeds posted in bottom left hand corner.

Still getting used to the new GPS so maybe more surprises in store.

I noticed on my 760 that when going through a school zone, I get a red warning flash on the screen if I'm exceeding 40kph. I hasten to add, this was outside school zone hours. It would be nice for the Garmin to recognise variable speed limits as the school zones are based on time.

Not sure that it is a Garmin problem. I think you will find that all school zones are around 8 am to 9-30am and afternoons are between 2-30pm and 4-30pm.
Think it may be the same in most states also as these are the times that I saw on a return trip to QLD and back to VIC recently.

Maybe it will be a new addon with the next upgrade/improvements.

Garmin states that it does not have any GPS device that alerts you, audibly, if you are going over the speed limit. A number of its GPSs will show the posted speed limit on most major roads (eg in Australia, USA, Europe etc). On my Garmin Nuvi 3790T the posted speed limit is indicated in the lower right hand corner and beside that it shows the speed I am travelling. When my speed exceeds the posted limit my travelling speed indicator changes colour from black to red. Although this is not an audible alert it is still very useful.
