How can you put both say McDonald's USA POI's and Rest Areas USA POI's on the same SD card to put in my Garmin nuvi775T? When I use the Garmin POI Loader it converts everything to the same named Poi.gpi file. If I try renaming one Poi2.gpi and then copy both to the SD card the nuvi only recognizes the Poi.gpi file in Extras. If I put both the McDonald's and the Rest Area POI files in the same directory I and run the POI Loader on it I only end up with the Rest Areas. Do I have to put each set of POI's on a separate SD card? When I put the SD card in the nuvi it asks if I want to upload to the nuvi and I've been telling it to Skip that since I only want to put them on the SD card.

If I understand what you are asking, this would be my advice based on my limited experience.

When you load any new or additional POI's they overwrite the ones previously installed. What I have done is create separate folders within one main folder on my computer with the POI's I wanted in the various categories or folders. They must always be loaded at once (together) and will only create one poi.gpi file in the GPS. If you make even a single change or addition to a folder within this main file, the whole main file must be reloaded at one time and it will overwrite the old one. It will only show up as one poi.gpi file inside the GPS when accessed through your computer but all the folders or files will show up individually when accessed in the GPS under 'where to' > 'extras' > 'custom POIs'. I have not loaded any POI's as of yet onto an SD card and am assuming it will work the same way. One thing I have noticed is that when I created sub catagories of additional folders inside the "first layer" of folders (categories) within the main folder on my computer, they did not all get loaded.

I hope this helps. Let us know how it works and we can all learn.

That's odd, I haven't any experience with sd card and POIs. I would suspect you should be able to load multiple files to the sd card and deal with them accordingly.

Why not just load the POIs to the Nuvi? If you clean out the unused voices ( languages you don't speak), vehicles and text you may not need yo can clear up a lot of space. I've totaled over 27000 POIs on my 255w so far.

Appreciated both your helpful comments. I did remove the foreign language text and language files from the nuvi (saved to a folder on my laptop in case ever need to put back for some strange reason) which freed up 275 MB on the nuvi, which should be more than enough for adding custom POI's. I then put the RestArea.csv file and the McDonalds.gpx file in the same Garmin POI folder on my laptop. Then used the Garmin POI Loader which automatically combined the two of them into a single poi.gpi file and installed it into the nuvi. This then resulted in showing Rest Areas and McDonald's restaurant POI sets separately in the nuvi Extras.

Adding to what roadrider01 mentioned there is a work around if you don't want to keep loading the entire custom POI database you have amassed via POI loader. Go into your \Garmin\POI\poi.gpi and edit the name of the poi.gpi file. As long as it remains a .gpi file your Nuvi will still recognize the points contained within. Then run POI loader and it will not overwrite the file but will create a poi.gpi file. You can do this for each category of POI you wish to load so you can edit them individually. Once you need to reload info to the Nuvi delete the file like you would if it was a USB drive or rename it poi.gpi and POI loader will overwrite it for you.

Since the Nuvi doesn't display the .gpi file's name as a category you won't have any extra menu navigation than you had originally...the .gpi file maintains the previously setup file hierarchy you designed within your directory.

Thanks again. It dawned on me I can check the free space available on the nuvi775T. Shows it has a total of 7.45 GB of which 3.96 GB were free after I had removed all the foreign texts and languages. Since they total only 275 MB I decided to put them back in case sometime in Europe the nuvi needs the text and perhaps the language to show a road marker that is not in English. After putting them all back it still has 3.70 GB free space. I'm impressed that it has this much.

how are you checking the free space and used space. I haven't found figures for my 255w yet. I think I only have 2 or 3 gb total. Not sure though.

With the nuvi connected to my laptop via the USB cable I am clicking on the Computer icon on my desktop and then a right click on the nuvi drive which shows up the same as an external hard drive. Then left click on Properties which shows the total, used, and free space pie chart.

You can accomplish the same thing on a Mac computer by right clicking on the GPS icon on the desktop when it is attached to the Mac and then left clicking on 'get info'.
