After read your case,
I just relocated my home address in my device even I have set private code on it.

I just did the same. Never even thought about my Garmin being stolen and used in this way. I too used the local Police Station. Don't need it for getting home but its nice to use this feature when travelling for holidays and I want to know how long it will take to get back.

Thanks Everyone

Thank you to all of you because it never occurrd to me either. I guess that I will have to out my address directly now when I'll be back from home... Even if it is a bit annoying to tape again my home address that is something I will never loose!

I have heard and noticed afterwards that people are taking their GPs of the window and hiding the unit in the car. If you leave the mount on the window it becomes very tempting to search!!!
Just a thought

I think the address of the closest police station to your home is a good one to put in for your home address. Or the nearest donut shop. Your sure to find some cops there.

Leaving the mount in the window is asking for trouble. I've heard stories of people getting their cars broken into and thieves stealing the mounts.

First off, please accept my sympathies over the violation of your personal property. I can't help but find it odd that someone would deliberately steal something that, well, is designed to be tracked and located.

Second, in response to your concern about can they access your information even if your unit is locked with a PIN and location code, the answer is NO. Your information cannot be accessed unless they return the unit to Garmin. The "soft-boot" of the unit by holding the right corner of the screen as you turn the unit on does nothing to remove the security locks. I found that tidbit of knowledge in the Help file on the unit. I think the Garmin website mentions it too.

Regardless, should any of us have the misfortune of having our rather expensive GPS units stolen, we don't need to worry about out information unless WE fail to set the security measures in place.

I hope that helps put your mind at ease (at least about your information).

Leaving the mount stuck on the inside of the window is not only drawing attention to the car, almost advertising the potential for valuables in the trunk, the suction cup will eventually wear out from sun damage. It only takes (literally) a few seconds to take the mount down and put it back up when you're ready to leave again. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.

I too set my home location somewhere close. Guess what? Lent the GPS to an ovetrseas visitor but forgot about informing him about the home location. Poor guy! He was looking all around the shopping centre for the house.

No one can get you unlock code and if it is sent to Garmin to be unlocked they will ask you where you set it ie: outside your house that is coded with the lock.

My Nuvi 260W was stolen out of my car, which was parked in my own driveway. I therefore assume that the thief already knows where I live and is not interested in burglarizing my house. Rolling Eyes

You are right mate. But it is annoying to loose mount suction because taking out the windscreen mount often. The rubber becomes old.

Theives also look for the suction cup mark on the window.

I've seen a disc you can stick on a flat part of the dashboard you can stick the screen mount to.

I have just ordered one and will let you all know what it's like when it arrives.
