Sharing the wealth here...

I discovered a fairly easy way to create POI files... from yellow pages data... and, with accurate longitude/latitude data! Geocoding for free, really...

Here's the recipe:
1 Windows computer
1 copy of delorme street atlas 2008 USA (plus edition)
1 copy of Microsoft Access

Use the phonebook search in SA2008 to generate a bunch of "locations" (1000 at a time, stupid SA2008 limitiation). Export these "locations" as XDATA. The XDATA export actually creates an Access database file *WITH* the long/lat coordinates!!!

Then, if you're fairly decent with MS access, you can use it to create txt or CSV (comma seprated values) files from which you can use POI conversion tool to create POI that your GPS can read.

That's about it.
