I have an old TT One XL the battery seems OK at the moment but in case I need to change it, I looked up videos and I found a good demo as how to open up the One XL and change the battery within. I also looked up online and found a lot of batteries at under £10 each. So if you are handy you can attempt this option.

I tried to replace a battery and it caught fire. I watched the YouTube video and it looked easy. Lithium is a very active metal and any breach in the case can ignite the battery as oxygen combines with the ion. I advise NOT to change the battery because it is glued inside the device and may rupture as you remove it. TomTom replaced 2 of my GPS units outside warranty because of the noted poor battery life. I suggest you contact them before attempting any replacement.

I think you are right, lithium is a volatile material so extra care will be needed. I have changed about half a dozen ipod batteries and as long as I do not use any sharp tools, I consider this an acceptable risk. Most of the ipod batteries are secured by a small adhesive tape and with the little plastic tool they supplied with the battery, they come out easily. I suppose the TomTom is basically the same.

I have persisted with the pathetic battery life of my TomTom GO 930 for too long and am contemplating ditching it for another brand. Has anyone made the switch to a comparable or better brand, and if so, can you recommend one?

The battery life was not even 4 months. My husband has a Garmin, he is very happy with it. I wished I would have seen this forum before I bought it.

Post Tom Tom Unreliability

I just saw a picture on Facebook of my grandson pretend driving with my old LG GPS attached to his kitchen window. I gave it to my daughter 2 years ago and she never used it. After 2 years it still powered up and functioned. My TomTom GPS that replaced it won't operate more than a few minutes on its internal battery and unless its been plugged in wont even turn on after a few days. What a POS. With that type of reliability I would only ever buy a unit I could trust with my personal safety and TomTom is not on my list anymore. Mad

Post TomTom battery replacement not difficult

I replaced mine a few months ago. What I did was to go on line and Google "TomTom (model) battery replacement" and up came more than one Utube video telling one how to do it. It does entail getting hold of a special screwdriver (explained on the video) which is very cheap and all came in a couple of days. The new battery is definitely better than the old (much more than the thirty seconds my old one had got down to) but, as others have intimated, none of them last long, you'd be very lucky to get an hour out of one, it is a disgrace, in my opinion.

TomTom offers some hints how to extend the battery life of your navigation device. For example, reducing the screen brightness and volume may significantly extend battery life.
Mainly, switch off your TomTom and it will extend the battery life.

As Hrid posted, you can get battery replacements online. On my Go 950 it was a case of flipping 2 side covers hiding 4 screws, undoing the screws then carefully lift and tilt the screen exposing the circuit board (the circuit board is attached to the screen with a ribbon cable). Disconnect the battery and speaker cable. Then there are 5 screws on the circuit board to undo.
Carefully lift the board to expose the battery. Replace the battery then reverse the procedure. Job done.
It's much much easier than it sounds. Very Happy

Hi Doug,

The battery is bad on all of them,
That's why it comes with a car battery charger, so that u can run it off the car while driving.

I hope this is helps

It is a bad battery, but just like Apple, they couldn't care less. The philosophy is: buy another one. Yes, it works when the ignition is on, but as soon as it is off you have to reset the thing. So, don't bother taking a rest stop on your journey.

Beware of leaving the device plugged into your cigar lighter socket. On some cars (I have a 2007 Astra) the socket is live all the time, including with the ignition off, and one result is that if you're away from home for a couple of weeks you're likely to find you have a flat car battery. The TomTom cigar lighter plug has a red warning light on it; check that it goes out when you take your key out of the ignition. If not, make sure you have the RAC's HomeStart cover.

I don't know what my Tomtom GPS is doing. I keep it plugged in to my 12V power outlet at all times; however, a yellow screen keeps popping up every time I turn it on with a picture of a half charged battery and the word WARNING. I need my GPS to work correctly as I am a Volunteer Firefighter and need my GPS to find all the addresses. Any info would be helpful, thanks.

Common sense, and thank you for the reminders!
