I also have an old Garmin StreetPilot 3 GPS, but, the memory stick only holds 64 meg and the largest stick available for that model is 128 meg, costing nearly $200 which is way too small to hold maps of any reasonable size, unless you only use the zones you are going to. It was and is a great unit but really not useable as it only uses serial port transfers. Takes hours to do part may updates.

GPS: Garmin Zumo 550

Hi,

I bought my Navman 80i and then when the next year came around the 2008 maps were nearly $180 so I forgot that as a bit of a joke. Then I had a problem with my 80i and it took 4 months for Navman to call me back (29th of December to end of April the following year) but I had fixed it by the first week of January so I wasn't worried. The limited contact details for Navman Australia made it impossible to escalate the issue I had.

Then I bought a Zumo and the maps expired on that so I bought the updated maps (Australia and NZ instead of just Australia) for about $108 and when they had issues I spoke to Garmin and they agreed that a few % of people had issues with the latest maps and that an update was coming.

I still use, and like, my 80i but the Zumo is being used more and more because the maps on the 80i are a bit out of date (and now Navman are offering the 2008 maps for $89 - meaning that the new maps are coming and will probably cost near $200 again whereas the cost of updating the Navman is half that the Zumo) and it the Zumo gives me everything that the Navman does.

Yes there was a price difference between the two ($475 for the 80i and $995 for the Zumo) but ti only takes three years of full price map updates to even out but during that I can use the 550 on the bike and in the car so this again makes it better.

So my opinion of the 'life' of products is based on the level of support that I have received from the suppliers - Navman seem to push out new product and forget the old (I could be wrong but that is how I see it - and how others that I have talked to see it as well) while Garmin seem to continue to support older products.

I am still using my Nuvi 300. I think it is more than 4 (possibly 5) years old. Still going strong. More than what I could say more some electronics.

I have a couple of gps's the nuvi 310 and nuvi 660,

The nuvi 310 I got back in 2005 and hasn't let me down till just recently so I'm shopping for a replacement at the moment , any suggestions you have let me know lol..

the nuvi 660 I got in 2007 and is still fighting well... It has turned out to be a very reliable unit thus far... I would high recommend this unit.

I hope this information helps you in your cause.

This is a great unit. Map updates are every year in June so that should make this unit last for years.

Watched a program on TV this morning re GPS units. The brands like Navman are now selling some below $200. The map updates are around $180, so won't be long before the GPS units are cheaper than the maps, in the lower price range. With htis in mind, I would be getting a new GPS with later technology for around the equivalent price, in the low end GPS units.
Having stated that, if you had an up market model, I would be updating the maps for 2-3 years to get the value from the GPS.

This is sounds advice, I too am currently in the middle of doing my homework before I venture out and purchase another / newer gps, I'm going to be looking for deals that include the current maps and if possible a free upgrade to the 2010 maps. So if you are considering do that, just check and see what deals are out and about at the moment.

Post Life span of 65ML

I have purchased a Nuvi 65ML less than 3 years ago but now the Garmin workshop tells me the mother board has failed and I need to replace the unit probably with equivalent new model of Nuvi 67 ML. Question is what is the mean life span of the Unit? if the unit did not meet the stated life span will the supplier be obliged to at least give me a discount for a new model. This would be fair marketing

My husband drive a dump truck in the city so he relies heavily on his GPS. He is going into his 5th year and we are now going to go shop for his 3rd GPS. The issue he seems to have is the plug in the GPS part become loose and won't charge the battery or the battery doesn't charge no matter what plug we use. Can anyone suggest a way of preventing this from happening. He has to remove the GPS from the truck everyday because he doesn't want it to get stolen as it has all his routes saved. Suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought my unit around 4 years ago, a Tom Tom Go. Still works well for me. Keep it out of the sun when possible and it they should last you some time.
