Post Satellite reception loss for Garmin Nuvi
Reply with quote

A week or so ago, Jun 09, whilst driving between Kalgoorlie & Perth, my Garmin nuvi 660 decided it was time to lose all Satellite reception & hasn't found it since! Anybody suffered a similar problem?

The unit is 2 years old, treated with respect (except verbally, occasionally...) & out of warranty...

Cost ~$1000...
Not happy Garmin!

See if you can find a re-set pin/point on the unit and try a reset.
My old streetpilot used to go weird occasionally and a reset fixed the problem.

Try to de-assembly the unit then unplug battery wait for couple minutes... plug back in then perform hard reset... good luck

I had the same problem. Temporary fix is to find a very small stripped wire about 3 or 4 inches and plug it in the external antenna input and then wait for 10 15 minutes. It would work like that, but that is a headache.

Permanent fix: I opened the two star shaped screws from the flip anttena and there was a flat plate and flex cable. I just touched them, moved wiggled the flex cable portion of the assemble carefully, then I turned on the unit. The reception was recovered very fast with all the bars green. I think that it was probably a lose connection that occurred from flipping up and down the anttena over years of useing the unit.

Thanks to all.

I've been having same problem with 680.

Thought it was battery but the ant. issue sounds more likely

It sounds lose antenna connection or physically problem. experienced with that, my nuvi 760 felt down and then lost satelite reception. Just did pressing around my nuvi, and successfully got connection again Laughing

Hi There!

I appear to have made a bit of a blunder, I am the author of this particular message and I thought I was logged in when I posted it, but apparently not... Embarassed

Anyhow, back to my Garmin nuvi 660.

I contacted the Garmin Service Dept. and was told if I returned it to them and if it could be fixed, it would cost a maximum of $119.00.

So "I bit the bullet" and sent it about a week ago.

I got a call from the Service Dept. yesterday and was told it couldn't be fixed and a replacement unit will be sent to me.

I know $119.00 is getting close to half the price of a new equivalent, but it seemed such a shame to throw a unit like that away.

Mind you, I won't be so old fashioned next time, if there is one...

Nuvi 660.
I lost the GPS connection on Saturday Oct, 31 driving from Montreal. I keep trying but no result since. Is it a way for Garmin to sell more machines?
I know that I am not the only one.
Any solution to this problem?

I have the same unit as yours. Mine still works, but reciept satelite slowly.

For your problme, you can try the reset button. or you can try to turn on the unit and still hold the turn-on buttion for serveral seconds. It may help you.

Post Losing Sats on 660

There are a number of references on the net for this problem. It seems the fold out antenna is susceptible to 1. electrostatics and 2. being plugged in when starting the engine. Can be easily checked by simply plugging in an external antenna,(this can be a single strand of wire into the centre external socket) and trying out the gps, outside preferably. If it works ok and finds sats, then either use an external antenna, or have the anttenna replaced. (expensive) The problem seems to get worse over time, seems to be intermittent and then fails. You can see the satellite screen by holding your finger over the sat signal strength bars for a few seconds.

Now we are in 2016 tried out several Nuvis and non worked within a Land Rover Discovery 4: Answer from Garmin:
Windshields with solar ray glass, solar tint, heated, or heat-reflective windshields, and insulated or Insta-Clear glass may affect satellite acquisition. An external antenna may be needed to receive satellite signal. Not all Garmin devices are able to connect an antenna.

No actual Nuvi is external antenna enabled!

The last reaction fro Garmin is: we won't take the new Nuvi back because it is not the Nuvi but the car!

Post GPS vs Dash cam

I just found out that my dash-cam was actually the culprit. i tested this theory with my wife's TomTom with the same result: dash-cam on. loose gps signal. Dash-cam off, gps signal back on.

Hi All
I have just bought a Garmin Nuvi 2599 LMT-D thought I would have a change from TomTom Go 730, well, what a mistake that was, just like the rest of you guys, lost satellite. I too have a dash-cam but it has never stopped my TomTom from losing comms. If it hadn't been for the TomTom I would never had found my why home. Yes I'm going to try and do the things that some of you have tried as it looks like Garmin isn't going to take any responsibility by selling a product that they themselves are saying doesn't work on vehicles that have (Windshields with solar ray glass, solar tint, heated-reflective windshields, and insulated or Insta-Clear glass may affect satellite acquisition). It's a pity, as I have two hand held Garmin satellite navigation systems and never had any problems with any of them. I was always told that Garmin was the best in the world but from what I myself have experienced and by the look of it, you all as well, my TomTom has proved different as it has never let me down. I think we all have been thought a great lesson and not waste our hard earned money on Garmin. It's a great shame as the Garmin had its good points but there again you live and learn

I have three GPS units and they all work fine in all of my cars except in my 2003 Thunderbird. As soon as the ignition switch is turned on, with the engine running or not, the GPS will loose it's signal. If I move away from the car about 20 feet the signal will return but as I approach the car the signal goes away. Works great in the car as long as I don't turn on the ignition switch. I have exhausted all of my options, with no positive results. Has anyone ever had or heard of this problem?
PS. IPhone GPS works good, not a problem.

I really appreciate the input I am receiving; However, I will try and clarify some of the logistics so you may better understand the situation giving you an opportunity to give more relevant suggestions or solution to this puzzling problem.
- I have three Garmin dash mount GPS units and they all work fine in other cars.
- In this example the T bird is not running, only the ignition switch is on. Does the same thing if the car is running.
- You do not have to be in the car with the unit (with the switch on) for the GPS not to function. I have disconnected the radio, heater, fan blower, and Pandora. The Fuel pump will go off after a few seconds with just the switch on and the engine not running.
- I have been in contact with Garmin, talked to a few of their Tecs and they have never experienced anything like this.
: Bought the car in Houston three years ago, GPS worked good from Houston to Mississippi. Also from Mississippi to Dearborn. Started having trouble with the GPS there, bought a new one

I got a Garmin Nuvi that work well in my Honda car but don't find satellites signal in my Toyota car. Always acquiring satellites signal. I put in a GPS signal booster which work in the first day of installation, but haven't got signal ever since after. But the GPS still work a1 on my honda car. Anybody got the same problem as mine? Any solution advise is welcome. Thank you very much.
