GPS: garmin nuvi 310

Mounting Bracket

The mounting bracket for my Garmin Nuvi 310 won't stay stuck to the windscreen with the result that the whole unit falls to the floor, which is obviously very annoying indeed. I wipe both the windscreen and suction cap each time I mount the bracket to the windscreen. Does anyone have any tips that may help the unit stay fixed to the windscreen?

Obvious question perhaps, but you are pushing the locking mechanism down once in place on the windscreen aren't you ?

If so, does the locking mechanism pop open when causing it to fall off ? When mine's locked, it's absolutely rock solid. There's no way of removing it from the windscreen without unlocking it.

Thanks for your message. Yes, the bracket is locked in place and still falls off. I contacted the local Garmin agent and it seems they have had some other complaints about the bracket. They replaced the bracket with a bigger one and so far so good. Cheers

Put a bit of moisture on the suction cup, you won't have a problem after that, or use your tongue.

Same with my nuvi 660. Agree, moisture on suction cup seems to help. I went away from the suction cup mount for this and a number of other reasons. I now use the Garmin "bean bag" on-dash mount, which works well.

Me too!

Mine has started falling off after it got dropped - suppose a subtle scuffing on the suction pad surface does it. Bought a new mount from Halfords - ok so far

GPS Mounting Brackets

I have the mounting brackets that come with any GPS unit is crap. Its a corner all too often cut. Why would you assume that if you are buying a $300+ electronic device that tells you where you are, where you are going, how fast you are going, asks if you want the shortest or the quickest route, and will even tell you how to avoid traffic...nevermind the dozens of tother features...and that you would have a durable and reliable mounting system? This one might be too much to ask!

If you are a travelling salesman like me and load your meetings into your POI travelling around the country, which forces you to be constantly moving your portable GPS from car to car...don't waste you time with the mount that it came with, trust me...

Get some good mount and cry no more!

When I had this problem with another unit I simply cleaned the area using acetone or nail polish remover after that I had no problems

I too had the same issues very frustrating...I ended up changing over to a vent mount. Was never a big fan of windshield mounts. Also wanted to change due to I travel and in some states windshield mounts are illegal.

I used the 'Bean bag' mount from day one. Not only is this a good mount but it removes any evidence of a GPS being in the vehicle. I take my GPS with me when I leave the vehicle and place the 'Bean bag' on the floor where it is inconspicuous to any passing thieving opportunist!

This seems to be a common problem with newer vehicles. In newer cars, the cabin plastics parts (i.e. dashboard, door trim, etc) emit a vapor/gas from the polyethylene. This film ocassionally prevents the suction cup from adhering to the glass surface. The mounting area should be cleaned with isopopyl alcohol. This usually yields a good result. If not, resolve to using the round metal disk that comes with most GPS units. Mount this disk with a "hook and loop" tape aka, VELCO instead of 3M tape. This makes it easier to remove it if needed.

Super invitation to thieves

I am not a big fan of windshield mounts, not because they fall off but because they obstruct your view and if inadvertently left there when you leave the vehicle, they are a super invitation to thieves. Not to mention you could be pulled over by the police if they see a suction cup on your windshield and mistake it for a radar detector while diving in a place detectors might be illegal.

I have found the neatest way to mount a Garmin is to use their suction cup mount on one of their smooth self-adhesive discs mounted in a convenient place on the dash. When in a hurry you can throw a cap or hat over the unit to hide it from possible thieves.
