Has anyone contacted Garmin re the problem ??

Do you think it's even remotely possible they hadn't? Garmin is blocking updates for their own reasons. As evidence, try searching Garmin's support site on the issue -- they pointedly do not address it at all.

That seems like an unusually long time to update maps. In my experience it's usually around an hour. Though I suppose it depends on your location, internet and the amount of time since your last update.

Hi

I've just bought the Garmin - it is taking hours to update maps. Is this normal? I stopped it a couple of times blaming he computer for running slow but now I'm not so sure it is the computer.

All other downloads (GPI POI file updates) are much faster. Even my ancient GPS was quicker (till it was dropped on the floor and broke...)

I've just bought a Camper 770 which said it was going to take 3 hours to update but actually took just over 2. To be honest I was just going to leave it in a corner to get on with it, but was quite surprised when I peeked and found it was finished.

Consistently over three hours on a 72Mb/s connection, fast processor. Only ever experience this length of time with Garmin. Makes me think it's the Garmin servers

Well, I have been in update for 7 hours so far. It says: "copying files 44.8KB/s". I'm at 78% with 3 hours remaining. I updated express first. In the middle of this I ran a speedtest. My slow internet said 5.5MB/s download. Yes Garmin, your fault!

I really believe that the problem of download speed of Garmin maps is on their end. As I regularly up and download large image files and do not find the sluggishness that I do when downloading new maps from Garmin. I also want to know just how old their satellite images are with BirdsEye. I checked the map of where I live and fine that it is at least 10 years old. I see more current images on other free applications.

Using Nuvi 54. Have internet speed of 300mb/s. The download of the update was super fast, BUT Garmin express only installs the download at a rate of 4mb/s. Garmin express advising 82 hours 33 minutes to install! Really?

Why not just let the map file to be an encoded file to download with normal download accelerators or other software. With todays internet connections it takes only few minutes to download af 4GB file. But Garmins software, has no download accelerator. It takes hours.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2597 that boasts "free lifetime maps"

Reckon in the 7 years of ownership havent been able to complete a map update once across multiple internet connections and computers in that time. What a farce.

My Garmin 396 satnav will update maps in about an hour if connected directly to my home wifi. Connected via USB cable/hub to the PC the update is taking around 3.25 hours. My suspicion is that Garmin is throttling back the download speeds depending on what it thinks is your best and (probably) most reliable download/update speed.

I have just purchased a replacement SatNav to replace one that died. The 15 updates required, including Maps and Safety Camera purchase, were completed in less than an hour when I was told it could take 3 hours!. I have a download speed of 50 - 60 mbps so was quite happy, There have been times when the downloads have taken forever but this may down to time of day and number of people trying to download at the same time, Pleasantly surprised today

Post Garmin RV-890 - TERRIBLE Download Speeds for Updates!

Just bought a new Garmin RV-890. Right away, it wanted to do a map & software update. Quite a large file (approx 7.8gb), but I figured no problem since I have 200+mbs WiFi here in the house... Ugh, after over an hour I'm still only at about 40% complete. At this rate I'm guessing the update will take about 2.5 hours!

The problem is NOT on my end, as I routinely download huge files from multiple sources and never suffer such lengthy wait times! I strongly suspect Garmin server speed is simply inadequate to support large files like this.

I am now over 36 hours on a map update. The download speed from the garmin server is 15.8kbs My internet speed is confirmed at 29mbs. This is rediculous. My nûvi 260W has been plugged into the computer for over 36 hours. It got down to 83% complete and 1 to go then suddenly it now says it will take another 23hrs and 36 min. I'll keep it attached and see what happens.

Still downloading. I started a 4pm Monday, it now 4:40pm Friday and is stitting at 4hr and 42 min to go. That's OVER 4 days connected to do a map update. It's running at 15.7kbs. This will be my last update on this unit. I'm seriously going to look at another brand. Updates from Garmin are just rediculous, and simply not worth the time, or my money as a repeat customer. Goodbye Garmin.
