Hi Peter,
Our POI moderators had a long night. Can you reload the GATSO file to check if it looks any better.

OK. I have done as you requested.

Observation..

The old GATSO file was 192kb in size.
The new GATSO file is larger at 222kb in size.

Previously (16th October 2016) when I ran the installation onto my Garmin there were 27645 total Cameras loaded.

With this new file which is larger(?) on 19th October when I run the installation there are 27618 total Cameras loaded (less).

I am surprised that the new csv is larger, but the total Cameras loaded is lower.

Yes I did run the removal process on the POI Loader first to ensure there is no old stuff on the garmin. I can see the new gpi file with 19th October date.

I will be going out in the next few hours and will test and let you know the results in this thread.

Hi Peter,
Size does not matter. Duplicates were marked with a (REMOVED) tag. However, the size indicates that you downloaded the complete file including all "(REMOVED)" POIs again. The new file should be downloaded using the "Do not show removed POIs" setup option.

Thanks Mark. Where do I find this option? I do not understand. Please be specific where I see this menu item to select it. It is extremely important, because I have just returned from a 45 minute drive around the local area and have a lot to tell you as observations. This I cannot do until later because I have some other household stuff to attend to.

I do repeat though, where is this selection option for "Do not show removed POIs setup option" as it will have an effect on what I am seeing on the garmin whilst driving ?

Hi Peter,

Setup options:
- go to any POI file
- Press the Download button
- Options button is hiding in a plain sight at the left hand side
- Show Removed POIs: select Exclude (REMOVED) POIs

1. OK. Got that! I did see that OPTIONS button and opened it, but did not look through the details enough to understand about the REMOVED POIs. Now you have explained, it is simple.

2. Now to some observations for you and the POI Moderators prior to the start of this. Say up to about the 14th October 2016.

a. When the Safety Cameras POI was loaded onto my Garmin, the car icon I used (arrow in this case) was always jerking away as I travelled down a road. It seemed to go forward a distance and then back a small distance. It was as though the there was a problem with the satnav seeing the satellites and jumping forwards and backwards all the time if you understand what I mean. Very frustrating and annoying.

b. I always used to see about 4 black GATSO camera icons only at every GATSO camera location. They would be spread randomly around the position. Mostly I would see 2 on each side of the road. They were only black camera icons and they moved around jerkily like the jerky car icon. No others appeared to be present at a GATSO site.

3. Now move to today 19th October 2016. Using the GATSO file this morning that did not have the REMOVED POIs and the later one this afternoon with them REMOVED (as described above by you) from the Safety Cameras POI, when loaded I observed:

a. The whole process was completely smooth with the car icon moving along with no jerkiness and the cameras showing solid in their locations.

b. There are 5 GATSO camera locations within about 6 miles of my house. They are in Long Hanborough, Bladon, Woodstock and then on either side of the A40 going westbound near Barnard Gate towards Witney Oxfordshire.

c. At each of these locations there was a mixture of icon information. Each camera appeared to overlay another one in exactly the same spot and was it was difficult to see that there was more than one. After a while I understood what was happening. It is most likely different camera files (ie Speed Cameras 30 mph with just a 30 mph icon and GATSO with black camera icon etc etc. Naturally at a 30 mph limit GATSO I saw the 30 roundel and the black camera icon, and at a 60 mph limit GATSO I saw the 60 mph roundel and the black camera icon. However there was another icon present and that one always took precedence over the others after the black camera icon appeared and then disappeared.

d. This extra icon does not show on any list, but is red and is more or less a negative of the RED LIGHT CAMERA icon. By negative I mean the red is white and white is red as in a negative photograph. It is not an exact negative, but it is close enough as a description. It is always on top of the other icons after a short period say 100 yards and does not disappear until the car is past the GATSO. It seems to be the only one for about 100 yards as you come up to the GATSO camera instead of the other icons that appear to be the background. It just appears to take precedence.

I hope this all makes sense?

Hi Peter,
Garmin does not have the fastest CPU. It may slow it down if you load a lot of maps and pois.
Regarding multiple icons: we recommend loading GPX proximity files for major camera files (icon and audio alert) and CSV files for all other files (e.g. 30mph cameras: just icons).

OK.

What you have said does not make complete sense to me sorry! You mean no audio for 20,30,50,60,70 mph speed cameras? Please be more specific.

You mean:

For GATSO use GPX and and the icon and audio (MP3)?
For Speed Cameras 30 up to 70 mph use CSV with just icons with no audio speed alert?

Thanks

Mark, Could you please clarify. Other members might also need to know! Also, could you please advise about this icon? Has someone (a moderator or a member) introduced it?

Hi Peter,
I usually help with downloads, not with choices. Our users mostly download major camera files (GATSO, Speed, Redlight, Speed+Redlight) with icons and audio alerts.
All other files are derived from these files and allocated a location/camera type specific icon. All our icon files are listed at our site. We do provide only icons that you download from our website.

Good on your for persevering Peter - in the end I gave up. After trying (unsuccessfully) to get a Garmin working without duplicates, then trying (unsuccessfully) to get a Navman working without duplicates ... I gave up and returned them both (so now I am only out of pocket for the membership of this site ... but no longer have a use for as I don't have any Sat Nav devices to load files onto any more). $20 is no big deal in the scheme of things - compared to maybe 20-30 hours of effort put into trying to understand all these file formats, what needs to be loaded, how to load it etc.

Yesterday I went out and bought a car cradle for my Samsung Phone (it's a big screen phone - about 5.7" - so bigger than a lot of Sat Navs anyway and with a MUCH higher quality screen and resolution) and I am now using google maps and a free speed alert app that can overlay on top of Google maps and tell me when I'm speeding AND (importantly) when I am approaching a speed or red light camera. The mapping of intersections seems very close to what I have been searching for. So far I have not found a single intersection that they have missed ... and there are definitely no duplicates ... the only downside is that I often find that an intersection with cameras pointing in just two directions will give warnings in all four directions (I'd much rather have that though - than no warning at all when there is a camera in my direction of travel).

The last week or two have been a big learning curve for me. It took a while for me to realise that spending a lot of money (on top end Sat Nav units and memberships to sites like this) and spending a lot of time setting everything up - will not guarantee the result I want. So instead - now I am spending virtually no time (apps are so simple - just load and go), and no money (I already had a current model phone, and Google Maps, Speed Cameras are all free) and it all just works and is nice and simple. Even better - apps update themselves automatically whenever required - so I always have the latest features, latest maps, latest speed cameras ... all without ever needing to sync my sat nav with my PC ... or search for updates ... or pay annual fees etc.

So - good luck to you with trying to get this all working how you want it to. I really hope you have a break through that rewards you for all the effort and don't end up having to give up like me!

Cheers,
Scott

Hello Mark...... This is a duplicate of the above post because a link to the Garmin forum I posted previously that is relevant to the discussion is missing.

Further investigation has revealed the following....

Downloading and installing all the Safety Camera files (except for the UK Road Safety POI - All in one) from the following link https://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_kingdom/safety/index.php ,
then going to the Alerts preferences on my Garmin and ticking the box for Garmin Safety Cameras shows all the icons from the above list that are appropriate for that camera.

However, also what I think I am seeing is that the same cameras are in several of the lists and that is the reason that I am seeing multiple icons at the same GATSO locations. For example I see the 30 mph icon, the GATSO icon and also the missing (from this forum/site) Red Camera icon. I think the reverse red or negative icon (although the one I see is not quite the same) is from the Garmin site.

I am going to do some further testing and load all the files as I did previously but remove the black camera bmp from my GATSO list. With a bit of luck, I should then only see the negative red icon and the speed roundel for that GATSO. OR Perhaps do the opposite?
Leave the the GATSO bmp in and remove the speed roundels bmps for 20, 30, 40, 50, 50, 60, and 70 mph

Thoughts?

Peter

Post Please suggest a list of files to use for Australia
Reply with quote

Hi Mark,
I've just returned to Australia, and am faced with having to deal with the overwhelming mess of all kinds of revenue generating cameras they have in this country. Japan, where I have lived for many years has very few cameras and these are updated as part of the monthly updates on the radar detectors you can buy/use in Japan.

Anyway, I've just signed up to this site and have been reading through the various threads and all the posts in this thread. Unfortunately I am still not quite sure which files I should download for Australia to try to minimize duplicate warnings.

Below is the list of files I think I need but could please correct me if I'm wrong and/or list a recommendation (for Australia) of the files I SHOULD use, along with "Show Removed POIs: select Exclude (REMOVED) POIs":

Do Not use: All In One camera file.

Files to Use:
Speed Camera
Red Light Camera
Speed & Red Light Camera (dual function)
Toll (QLD only)
Mobile Speed Cameras
Traffic Camera
Variable Speed Cameras
Accident Black Spots

Would it be correct to assume that the various "Fixed Speed Cameras" should be covered by the above list of Speed and Traffic cameras?

Thank you for providing this great service, like others have said this site is full of great content.

Post More Australian Camera File Questions

Mark,
Another, related question is:
How much overlap is there (by design or otherwise) between the following files? I mean how much would I miss out on if I only used the Speed & Red cams file and not also the individual Speed Cams and Red Light Cams files?

- Speed and Red Light Cameras
- Red Light Cameras
- Speed Cameras
- Traffic Cameras

Also, is the Traffic Cameras file some kind of a combination file of any of the above?
