Has anyone contacted Garmin re the problem ??
I have had minor problems in the past and it only took an email to their support section to get a quick reply.

They know. They monitor their servers and their outbound speed much more then we do.

Sad I turned on the computer and plugged it in after dinner yesterday... It is almost the middle of the afternoon today.

Internet connection is fine. 16 hours to download??

I was offered 3 software updates. The FM updater was offered, but I did not pay for that. If your model does not support that update, uncheck it and continue. That should resolve the problem. DO NOT select UPDATE ALL if you have not paid for all the features offered.

I've had this problem in the past too and I got so fed up with Garmins lousy turnaround. What will teach Garmin to improve their service?

I have Windows 8.1, AND Fios Quantum 75 MB/S download speed. Garmin just charged me 50 bucks for the upgrade and uses taxpayer owned GPS Satellites. This is OUTRAGEOUS !! AND BY THE WAY, MY LIFETIME TRAFFIC UPDATER STOPPED WORKING 6 MONTHS AGO.

Hi

I've just bought the Garmin - it is taking hours to update maps. Is this normal? I stopped it a couple of times blaming he computer for running slow but now I'm not so sure it is the computer.

Even my ancient TomTOM One was quicker (till it was dropped on the floor and broke...)

I just purchased a 2597 LMT and did not have an issue with the update....... I didn't time it but it would have been no mare than a half hour.

One thing to check is to see if your antivirus is causing an issue..... as the update is trying to progress maybe the antivirus is stalling it by scanning it

Maybe try disabling your antivirus just for the update and see how it goes.

Good suggestion Roy, have had exactly that happen in the past.

What speed is your Internet connection? Some of the map updates are very large and will be slow on a slower connection, plus there may be others downloading at the same time.
Time doesn't matter as long as you eventually get the whole update ok.

Time does matter as a consumer of Garmin products. If it installs extremely slowly I also want to know why, so I know if your product is worth the money. Make sense?

I have 2 garmin GPS units with Lifetime updates and have never had any major time problems since going wireless at much higher speed connection than landline connection.

So glad people said it isn't internet or computer. I have 75Mb/s download 75Mb/s upload that normally functions about 5% higher than the stated 75/75. It's definitely a Garmin idiosyncrasy! I'm not sure if their servers are crap or maybe the software somehow purposefully limits bandwidth. Isn't it curious you need a program to download the updates and the website can't do that directly? Update your servers, Garmin! It isn't 1995 anymore.

It is not the computer. It is not the speed of the Internet connection. I have a powerful desktop that uses 20 MBPS download speed. Garmin simply has not bothered to add bandwidth to enable high speed download. You may have a fat pipe but if the faucet is dripping, your bucket will take many hours to fill up. Garmin has not improved its bandwidth in the last 10 years.

Been downloading Nuvi50 update and Nuvi 29?? both extremely slow on Fast Internet with full Windows 7 professional. Garmin devices are good, but upgrades and customer support are below my expectations.

My Internet connection is about 10Mb/s (slow for today standards). But it is not the download because the updates are downloaded in your computer even before you start updating your device. The needed conversion of the maps takes less than a minute. However, the connection of your computer's USB to Garmin device is the clog. The USB 2.0 has a real speed of 35MB/s and it is working at 84 KB/s. No, it is not your computer, it is a bad design from Garmin. I copied to my portable hard drive 20GB of information in less than 20 minutes (it might happen in about 15 minutes) in the same port I use to upgrade my Garmin GPS's.

Good thinking, Rafa. It may be a problem with a Garmin's USB driver software.
Can you time how long it takes to copy the map file from your Garmin to your computer? It should take the same time to transfer a map from your computer to your Garmin.
Still, it shouldn't take HOURS.
Cheers

This is outrageous Garmin, are you yet another blue chip corporation who only cares for shareholders? Do you not listen to your customers?
I purchased a Garmin Zumo navigator for my motorcycle (over 400GBP) yet cannot update the Europe maps because the estimated time for install is over 20 hours. Some answer on this forum about what you are going to do about this is overdue!
