Took my new 3590 out for a walk today. From fully charged the battery was dead in less than an hour which in my opinion is absolutely useless. Any tips or advice on extending battery life when out walking would be appreciated.

Should last a little better than that, but, in car GPS units rely on external supply for any length of extended use.
Better to get a handheld for hiking etc, or if in town, use the mobile phone for directions.

Nice reply but it doesn't address my question at all.

Disable some functionalities like bluetooth, reducing screen light, turn off proximity point alerts, etc. can improve duration. In the meanwhile, you can turn off your GPS until you really need it to get back home Smile

Same problem with 3490LMT, was a bit dissapointed with the battery life, I turned off Bluetooth, screen brightness is very low but perfectly readable and this has improved it.

You can buy bigger capacity batteries for these units, which fit into the original spot but more capacity.

Thought I would weigh in on battery life. Very Happy

My 2 year old Nuvi 1340 battery was only lasting 30 mins, I had an old 255W with a broken screen laying around so thought is the battery the same.

Yes it is or at least the same size, and as a bonus larger capacity, so now my 1340 is lasting 2 1/2 hours if needed.

My experience with mobile type batteries is that they last a long time or fail within max 2 years, I have a 8 year old Treo still working fine with original battery.

But in reality if you want long battery life from a GPS get a handheld, my Etrex 20 runs 20h on Apple rechargeable. Now looking at replacing Nuvi & Etrex with a Montana, or maybe a Nuvi 50 dead simple & an Oregon 600 Very Happy

If the battery has been heat effected over time it's charge will lessen, as most old-style batteries benefit from a good discharge every now and again, and most in car GPS rarely get flattened out.
