How do you get these free updates? I have completed all the required forms and submitted them electronically to Garmin but when I connect I get a message saying that the device has no update service associated with it?
Any ideas?

Did you have your GPS connected to the computer and log into map updates with the Garmin lifetime updater program. Wont work without GPS being connected as the program looks at the model and serial numbers and checks with your records on file.

From my experience with Garmin the past 2 years, it appears that 'release' updates quarterly. I don't see the point to pay Garmin $79 or $89 (or whatever their fees is) for "unlimited updates" when they come out, to what I have determined, quarterly. Their last update was November 2011 so I'd expect the next one to be in Feb or March.

The techs at Garmin are very helpful & you can always call them if your issues can't be resolved. Be patient though, sometimes I've waited on hold for 20-30 minutes. Here's their contact info:

Go to the Garmin site and download the Garmin Lifetime Map Utility. This can easily be done through the My Dashboard feature. This program will need to be linked to your Garmin. It will run in the background and automatically download a new map when available. You can then install to the GPS unit.

When you bought the unit with Garmin Promotion, you could update it freely.
If you forgot to register it, best way to contact Garmin and let them know your purchased date and invoice. After all, you will able to freely update the unit from computer by Garmin lifetime update.

The free map updates are only for maps installed on the main GPS unit. They don't apply to maps on memory cards.
I got stung because I bought a garmin Nuvi 855 from USA. It said it had the current Australia & New Zealand City Navigator on it.
It had the North America City Navigator on the main unit and the Australia & New Zealand City Navigator on the memory card. The Garmin dashboard couldn't see the map on the memory card and Garmin advised me that the free update only applied to the USA map on the main GPS unit. (useless if you live in Australia)

Hi All

Loving my new 2595LMT Very Happy (except for traffic not working and allowing me to join a 3-mile tailback on M6 yesterday rather that re-routing me Evil or Very Mad )

Is there a way to see what data has actually been UPDATED with each new map release? i.e. to list the differences between current maps and the updated maps.

It seems that updating the maps is a process of downloading the WHOLE of the new map set and not just the updates. Is that right?

Despite the new A46 having been operational since spring this year, my Garmin still thinks I am ploughing through farmers fields! How long does it take for Garmin to actually get the new roads into the 'updated' maps?

Cheers

The map updates are in one file only and not partial. No way of getting changed files only.
Garmin get the road/map information from map makers so the fault/lag lays with them and not Garmin.

No...it doesn't.
I have had three 3790t's.
Two died on me in the warranty period.
Garmin transferred the Lifetime Update to the new operating unit.
Took a couple of days but I was satisfied with the result.

Post Garmin 1490 LMT traffic facility - useless

Garnin 1490 LMT

FM Traffic only works sporadically, despite travelling in the UK - M25 box or M40 area where coverage is good. Often it takes 45 minutes to load! This behavior began right after taking my 2nd update (1st being right after purchase) and hasn't been resolved with subsequent updates.

Come on Garmin - fix it please
