Anybody tried out GPS on the new ipad? I know it uses AGPS, which is not as good as proper GPS (I think only a few phones have the proper GPS, like the Nokia N900), but it looks like such an amazing device. Have used google maps on it, it works great.

I'll wait for a proper GPS iPad 3G. AGPS is just not reliable for any GPS SatNav software use.

A-GPS = ASSISTED GLOBAL POSITION SYSTEM

The iPad Wifi Model does not have built-in GPS hardware. Just the iPad Wifi+3G has the proper Gps hardware and works great like the iphone 3GS. Ipad is better, faster with better resolution.

Yeah, I heard that. I understand that only one phone (an expensive Nokia), has proper dedicated hardware, as you would find in a stand alone GPS device.

Still, this should be good enough for around town.

I have the standard iPad wifi (ie without the GPRS), but it will still work with mapping software, and locates me on the map, so presumably it does still have a GPS locator in it even without GPRS option?

You can get that mobile me app that lets you locate a missing iPad too so it must have it built in.

Not sure about the iPad 2 though.

I've used both the iPhone 4 and the original iPad both here in Australia and in the US, without any difficulty.

In terms of accuracy I've found both to be pretty good, the one thing that Apple does need to work on however is the turn by turn navigation. My old dedicated GPS still wins here hands down for ease of use and letting me know before the turn has happened that I need to turn.

iPad 2 WiFi (without 3G) has location services based on available WiFI networks. It can work in big cities but it's absolutely useless outside.
Be warned.

Ipad's and Ipad2's dont have any GPS capabilities in the wifi only models.
In theory though theres nothing to stop you connecting to the net and using google maps etc to find your location, or any one of a number of websites that do the same or similar.

Very Happy

I have an iPad 1 and it works very well.. In fact I use arcGIS explorer on there regularly. Sure no standard turn by turn navigation however there are plenty of apps which give it this functionality.

The iPad 3 (or the iPad as Apple now seem to be referring to it) has 4G and GPS built in and should be more than capable of running Sat Nav software very well.

The only issue is always going to be the size of the device and finding a way to mount it in your car so that it is visible but not obscuring your view out the front windshield.

There are several apps that reported work well with the iPad and iPhone, GPS Drive Motion X and MapQuest are free or low cost. (99 cents for Motion X). A 3G model is required for the iPad.
