Should I download the basic csv file for POI or use GPX of similar?

If you are using Garmin, you should download the basic csv file. Otherwise, GPX format can be used in much broader range of software.

Post Custom POI's

Interesting site and is starting to make some sense to me.

Couple Quick question these are custom POI's we are talking about ?
If I load some of these custom points in it will only copy over the custom files that are on my machine, not the ones that came with the GPS ?
How do you save what you already have can I just copy them to a directory on my computer ?

Thanks in advance

Brad

Hi All,
I just joined this forum. It looks like a great resource! When I downloaded and installed the Garmin POI's for red lights, and selected New York in the filter, did I only get NY and now need to add each State I plan to travel to? Or, did I get all States?

Hi
You, as a registered users, can download a country level file. Clear all filters and download that file again.

I have just become a new member of this site. I am very pleased with the material available for updating my Garmin Nuvi 1490T which I have just purchased. To all new members I advise to have a good look at the website and become familiar with the material, it took me a while to be aware of how to upload files with Garmin POI Uploader, also how to post material on the discussion forum, anyway I am very happy with being a part of the GPS data team website. Thanks

Post Too many files to chose from

In looking at the Australian speed camera, red light camera files it is a bit difficult to decide what to download as there are individual files for different types of cameras and then near the bottom there is a file that suggests that it contains all of the other files.
I have downloaded this on to try, I hope I am correct..

After playing around trying why the wav file was not being loaded into the GPS I found out that when you are uploading the POILoader and Sox.exe dont have the Sox file in the folder that holds the POILoader programme. Load the POILoader first and run it. At the end you get a prompt "done". Select this button but dont upload any updates you have down loaded yet. What happens when you run POILOader is that this programme creates a file called Garmin in the C drive. Locate this file and save the SOX.exe file here. Now run POILoader again and follow the prompts. You will find that the WAV file load up perfectly.

Post New Camera POI sites not recognized

Have been having a problem with my unit recognizing new speed cameras on Bruce Hwy between Brisbane and Sunshine Coast for a few months I tried re-downloading and installing POI files numerous times and tried adding the sites as favorites to see if I could somehow get it to alert me that way, but no joy. Finally got my unit to recognize new camera sites when I did a firmware upgrade from Garmin. Now my unit works like a charm

I am a newbie with a Nuvi 1490T so I suggest you check before you take my word for any of this. However it has worked for me.

I am interested in cameras and school zone in NSW and ACT (mostly) so I too wanted to know which files to download.

I decided to use .csv files so that I could easily check the contents using Excel, Calc or Notepad and what I found was that the individual 'Speed Cameras xxx km/h' csv files contained many more POIs and much more detail than in any of the collections (Speed Cameras, Speed and Redlight Cameras and Australian fixed cameras).

Also, by downloading the individual speed files, they can be linked to their own individual icon and sound file, although that is nice rather than essential.

So what I downloaded was, for NSW and ACT
* each of the 'Speed Cameras xxx km/h' csv files,
* Redlight Cameras
* Fixed Cameras (Traffic Cameras)
and for each, I also downloaded its .bmp file (its icon) and its .wav file (when it existed).

I created 3 folders for these in a POI folder
* Speed Cameras for all of the xxx km/h files and their .bmp and .wav
* Redlight Cameras for the redlight csv, bmp and wav files
* Fixed cameras for the last

When you run POI Loader, you just point it at the POI folder and it loads them all. What you will find, when you restart your GPS, is that each of these folders appears as a separate category of POI when you go to Where To? > Extras > Custom POIs.

Regarding the Wav files
* not all of the xxx km/h files have an associated wav file on the DB. Doesn't matter, just copy one of the other xxx km/h wav files and rename it the same as its csv file
* According to 'Loading POI Files', page at
https://www.gps-data-team.com/installation_instructions_garmin_poi_loader_3.php
Nuvi 2xx, 1xxx and 3xxx do not use .mp3 files, only .wav.

Finally, I found that the separate NSW and ACT School Zone files in the Education group are much more comprehensive than the 'Variable Speed Cameras' file in the Road Safety group. I did the same for these, downloading the csv, bmp and wav files and put them in a folder, Education, within the POI folder.

It is a lot more work to download the individual files, but I personally think it worth the effort. The result seems to work beautifully in my 1490T.

Cheers,

Explained very well Hugh, and as you point out, more effort required but the extra benefit would be worth it.
