Have to agree so far. Just downloaded the Base Map program and doesn't appear to be as good as MapSource. Will spend more time looking at it and report back.

Have used it over the past week and still find that Mapsource is better than Base Map.
May need a name change to Basic Map Confused

Mapsource is a computer program that allows you to view and make up your own routes, then download it to your Garmin GPS. Mapsource is not on your GPS.

can you load POI's into mapsource then load the map to save time in looking up your POIs?

i am actually trying to figure out is worth anything other than trip planning waypoint route mapping or not.

is there any other advantage to mapsource?

Can be very helpful to find locating anything you want without going to the car and using a GPS.
Computer screen much easier to see/ read and you can use the various tools to measure / compare different routes etc.

You can enter a point that you wish to visit as a waypoint and name it whatever you wish, and then load it to the GPS included in the route that you wish to take.

whats mapsource

Mapsource is a mapping program from Garmin, that allows you to specify points that you wish to travel through, (done on you computer) then transfered to your GPS. Very good if you know where you wish to travel and through what areas you wish to pass through, rather than letting the GPS select the route that it wants you to take.
Just map out the whole roads/ areas that YOU want to use.. Very Happy

If you are having problems understanding the previous explanations by many here, suggest you get the program and find out first hand.
Have read through previous posts and it is all explained in those posts. Smile

It's a map program on which you can plot waypoints and routes before transferring them to your GPS.

Hi
I have the 660 model and have since found that with trial and error the unit only accepts waypoints when sent from mapsource the points go straight to the favourites folder so I have to name them 1,2,3 etc to plan a route. Not very user friendly. If any one knows a better way please let me know
Thanks

Use the route tool in Mapsource. After creating the waypoints, you just click on each waypoint for it to be included in the route. Then send the whole lot to the 660.

My Nuvi 255W did not come with the CD neither, but my Rhino did. It is a good tool to save your data for later use.
