I have had 3 different tomtom units and they all had battery problems.
Either the charging circuit in the units is rubbish or the batteries they supply from the factory are rubbish.

I have fixed them all easily. You will find heaps of replacement batteries already pre wired for your particular model.

Buy yourself the mini TORX screwdriver form your local electronics store and open the unit up, it is fairly logical how to replace it once you open the unit.
Be careful of the flexible cables not to damage them, or get a friend who is good with electronics to replace it for you.

Don't bother calling tomtom, they are the worst service center I have ever contacted, I will be getting a Garmin as my next unit as the Tomtom units are too buggy.

Post TomTom Battery Life

I have been using Tom Tom GPS for some 6 years now and have found the battery life to be average, they do not appear for me to stay operational long enough with out some charging taking place during a long drive/ride ride in my case for I use the Tom Tom on motorcycles. If I have the aux power source from the cig lighter to the Tom Tom's they will run for the duration of a 8 hour ride, but do require a full charge overnight. I have found that the cig lighter plug vibrates on the motorcycle and comes out a little during the ride, this goes un-noticed and when you want to actually use the GPS it goes flat. I have over the years purchased replacement batteries with higher Ah ratings and I have found them to give a long run time, but they can be different in size and may required some slight modification to the internal casing of the Tom Tom to accommodate the replacement battery.

Oh no! I have a GO 910 as well for over 4 yrs and as expected the poor battery life. Since I don't use the GPS that often on daily basis, it gets drained right down and usually needs a cold start from the car charger with the TomTom drum tune. Read that some people have problems starting the GPS when battery is fully drained. Hope it doesn't come to that. Many people seem to complain about the poor battery life of TomTom but are the other brands any better? Seems my mobile phones holds better charge after 6 yrs than my GPS which gets used less often!

Once again I am disappointed with the battery life of TomTom GPS's. I have owned many Tom Tom GPS's and have had a reasonable battery usaged before the having to consider finding a replacement battery. The 2 Tom Tom One IQ Routes Editions I have had very poor battery usaged and they would go flat within one and half hours after being fully charged. I have looked after the batteries in both units and am very disappointed that I need to have the cig charger attached always to keep them going. I wonder if the batteries installed in these units are fresh or have already had a long shelf life, suppose I will never know. Also not that happy with the new holding ring clip assembly that comes with these units, I find they un clip themselves at times. I presferred the old setup where the units slipped into the grooves of the base holder, never had problems with that setup at all.

My Tomtom Go730 battery is also rubbish (fit only for the Trash!). I am encouraged to see that some members have replaced batteries successfully - that's why I joined the forum earlier today. But I didn't find an idiot's guide on how actually to do it!

I could just buy a suitable Torx screwdriver but someone said there is more to it than that. Someone else talked of "flicking off the display surround". It would be nice to get it right first time.

So can someone please give me a clue on how it can be done before I take an axe to it and destroy a good instrument.

Needless to say it is well out of warranty!

Thanks in advance.

Depending on the make up of the battery [Lithium Ion or Nickle Metal Hydride], constantly using the navigator via tha battery and never flattening it completely is detrimental. Especially when you use 50% then recharge it all the time, the battery ends up with what is know as a "Memory Effect".

Try to fully discharge the battery within the unit every so often prior to recharging, say every third use, if you do not have the unit constantly powered when not in use.

Conversely if you have the unit constantly powered when in use, exercise the battery to flat by unplugged from power and using by battery alone.

Hope this helps.

Only NiCads suffer from the above treatment. Lion. NiMH just don't care and have NO memory effect.

Can someone post the instruction on how to change the battery on a 720? what tools do I need and where to find the battery?

I am luck to get half an hour out of mine.

It seems to be taking longer and longer to find enough satellites to start navigating. Is anyone else find the same problem?

My new battery arrived today, £8.75, 1300 mAh.
Looks straight-forward to change over. Hope to dig out the old battery in the next few days.
I don't have the plastic thingy (Spuger) but the instruction to dismantle my Mac mini said to use a wall paper scraper. That worked brilliantly so I intend to use a smaller version on the tom tom. I wonder if a credit card would work?

TomTom GO:

Get a new 3 pin connector battery for TT.

1. Remove antenna plug and screws by flipping the unit on its face on a soft surface. Remove the antenna plug with your fingers, and remove the two screws indicated.

2. Separate display from case using the screwdriver or something slightly larger. Push on the threaded, insert where the screw had been until you begin to see the front of the unit move away from the case. Move back and forth between the two sides to carefully pull the top of the unit away from the case. The bottom of the unit is held into the case mechanically using a little hooks. Lift the unit away from the hook on the bottom during separation.

3. Remove display unit flex cable and split the unit. The amber colored plastic with the copper traces in it is the flex circuit. Peel that black tape off. Find the latch that holds the flex circuit into the connector. Raise the latch tabs and the flex circuit will slip right out of the connector. Remove the wire connector to split the unit into two freestanding pieces.

4. Remove all 4 screws securing main unit to case

5. Separate main unit from case

6. Remove the battery connector and remove battery

7. Separate old battery from circuit board with a very thin screwdriver

8. Install and secure your new battery

9. Try to put all parts back together, or start browsing for a brand new (working) GPS unit.
