GPS: Garmin Nuvi 3790t

Post Custom POI Unable to load to Garmin 3790t
Reply with quote

Help !
My computer is a Mac.
I have successfully downloaded , installed and verified Safety Cameras from this site using the provided Garmin POI Loader.
However, I am unable to successfully install a Custom POI to my Garmin.
This is the procedure I followed:
Equipment is Garmin 3790t /Mac Computer /Garmin POI Loader
I selected an arbitrary address close by 65 Yallambee Road Jindalee 4074 Australia using the site POI Manager.
I then verified the co-ordinates and MAP position and saved the file as a GPX file which appeared in my Download file.
I transferred this to Finder and then to my Garmin/Safety file which was previously used to download the RedLight etc files on this site.
Using the POI LOader I attempted a download to my Garmin.
The download indicated success but the POI does not appear in the Garmin.
I used CSV / GPX / GPXx in later saves but the addition is still not there.
The following is the POI Manager file generated.
This POI file was generated by GDT POI Manager - http://www.gps-data-team.com/

152.9422992 -27.5367916 65 Yallambee Road Jindalee 4074 Australia
Please advise what I must do to achieve loading this Custom POI.

Have the same problem with my 3760 but got it working today.
In the navigation menu go to proximity points.
Check the custom POI and press save. I noted the box unchecked itself when returning to the previous menu after pressing save.
I tried this a few times and finally on the menu alerts was "enabled"
Seems to be registering the alerts now.
If you work out how to get the school zone icons to show on the map let me know. I get an alert but the bmp icon does not appear - frustrating when the wife's tomtom works like a charm.

Post Custom POIs

This was working during the week, however when I updated the POIs trobles returned.

I have a 3760 not 3760T. Have downloaded the latest POI loader. Confirms POI's loaded to device, when I then check device via explorer poi.gpi file initially shows at 538kb. On disconnecting the unit custom POI category is unable to be selected from proximity points menu, only option is Garmin Safety Camera's? When I reconnect device back to PC and look in the POI folder via explorer the poi.gpi is is in the POI folder BUT the file shows at 0kb ? Done this many times now with no success.

Did you get it working?

I solved the Mac problem.
I changed to an old PC Laptop solely to load the GARMIN.
I cleared the pre-loaded POI's and downloaded from this site.
All OK...except for the icons.
I get the boxed text warning and the voice warning but not the appropriately coloured camera icons.

???

If you have any pre-loaded POI's included in the purchase and you decide to install say another database...
Start the POI Loader.
Click on option to delete all previous.
Disconnect the Garmin and start manually.
Check the "EXTRAS" option .
The message should say there are no extras loaded refer to Garmin site.
Collect all the GPS Data Team POI's of your choice in the one folder.
Connect to the computer via USB.
Start POI Loader and load the POI's from that folder.
Disconnect.
Verify.....
Start Garmin
Index WHERE TO>> Scroll down..EXTRAS...CUSTOM POI's
All the data in your folder should appear.
This worked for me.

Post Re Custom POI

This is weird.
My 3790t rolled over...would not continue to boot-up.
Vendor replaced it so very pleased about that.
But what worked before only partially works now.
For e.g. I am unable to clear the Custom POI's installed.
The POI Loader says all points have been removed but disconnecting from USB and checking manually shows the Custom POI's still there.
On the previous 3790t they were verified as deleted before proceeding with a new database.
I attempted this a number of times and then in frustration tried to load the new CSV database of my choice on top...from a different folder.
The new POI's took...which should not happen. All POI's are supposed to be in the one folder and are then converted to the proprietary Garmin GPI format.
There are around 4 duplicates but I have decided to leave well enough alone until somebody in the forums clears this up, as I have all the warnings and the icons of choice I could not achieve before.
btw...the Garmin software is the latest...2.50...and all this was achieved on my PC laptop....not happy with claimed Mac compatibility.

Post Quirky software issue with upload

OK, this is what I discover by accident so you guys who have same issue might like to give it a try. I have also written to Garmin support about this issue so hopefully they will fix it.

Firstly, I should say that my first 3790T packed it in after only 3 days. Anyway, I returned it to the shop and got a new exchange.

First thing I do is I upload the POI.GPI file that I created after downloading all those files from GPS data site. Thanks to the site, I have to say it has the most comprehensive database. Anyway, as instructed, I use the POILoader program to upload the POI file onto my 3790T. Disconnect from computer, boot it up and shockingly, no custom POI under EXTRAS. Then checked under PROXIMITY and only found GARMIN POI.

I then plug the 3790T back on computer and the POI file is still there. Anyway, after much tweaking without success, I decided to check if my 3790T has any software update in the hope that a newer version program would solve my problem. I use the WebUpdate program to do a check and it says my 3790T already has the latest software. But I chose to re-install the program anyway. After that, I unplug my 3790T, boot it up and wallah, the POI file is now there as it should be. I decided to double check if the re-install is the reason. Indeed, I removed the POI using the POILoader and then reinstall the POI, and again, no POI. Again, I re-install software using WebUpdater and again, it register the POI after that.

Not only for POI, it is also the same for my favourites. I transferred my favourites from my old nuvi 760 to the 3790T. Again, it just would not register even though on the computer, the favourite file which I named current1.gpx is there. Again, I rein-stall software and again after that, it now registers the favourites!

Hope the above helps. In other words, if you already have preloaded POIs, just remove them first using the POILoader. Then re-install software and unplug 3790T. Boot up and double check all custom POIs are gone. Then reconnect back to computer. After that, load the POI followed by re-install software. Disconnect from computer and boot up 3790T and you should find the POI file as it should.

You are not alone - I have been frustrated by this issue for weeks. Garmin support is of no help. Garmin suggest the gpx file I was trying to update was "incorrectly formatted".

I have started downloading the csv files and have more but mixed success.

I would have thought that with such complaints from yourself and me and probably many other customers, they would have fixed the problem by now. I mean, I wrote and tell them that the 760 works perfectly as it should. So surely, only a matter of taking that part of the software from 760 and put it into the 3790T to resolve this bug? Anyway, at least it works with my method so far. But I do hope they resolve this issue because I don't necessary want their latest software which can cause problems. I had that experience with my 760 in the past. Works perfectly until I update to latest software and the 760 started to freeze up on me. So had to reverse the update back to the old software and still working perfectly. One of the main reason I bought the 3790T is for its lane guidance ability. Otherwise, I must say my trusty 760 is still the best.

Interstingly Garmin support inform me they have had no other complaints about POI's not loading correctly and that I must have a faulty unit ...

Took the first one back inside the 2 week window offerred by Dick Smith and got an exchange. The new unit, within a month of purchase, now refuses to reboot, it just caughts in a loop and continually powers off. This unit is being replaced by Garmin tomorrow so I'll then be on my third ...

The wife's tom tom is looking better every day.
