Today, I purchased a new unit 3790T and say goodbye to 660.

I have some good feeling about the new friend.

- Fashion design, light, slim.
- Clear image, display, coz by high resolution 800.
- Speed alert, drive test, find it is accurate, even not on the main road.
- Speed meter display is very similar as car speedometer, doesn't like my old one which shown speed is 100km, but car's speedometer already pointed at 105-110km.
- Multi language guide.
- Mygarmin web update indicator.
- More attractions are inside the device, from ATM to Fuel station and Restaurants.
- Most important is that lifetime warranty map update. Limit time only.

so far, very enjoy the new fellow and will test more and share my experience here.

Just upload the .mp3 files for alert, but it doesn't work on 3790T.
Will try to change .mp3 to .wav, hope it will be ok.

I purchased the 3790T and after 3 days of use, I shut it down to find it would not restart. I got Bestbuy to replace the unit. Love it so far....

Missed feature of 765T:
Able to select location and then look for at my POI's or the built in ones. Really need this feature.

POI's:
I was able to upload my POI's and search for them, but when I get close to a POI, it doesn't alert me. Any ideas??

Voice Command:
Love this feature. Works great but lacks the ability to search my custom POI's.

I just have a long trip with this new staff. I found that customer POIs have been uploaded into device and I can checked it.

For the Speed & Red Alert, I couldn't see any pics on the screen which is .bmp formate. However, there is some message pop up on the screen. The message is white word with black colour backgroud filling with small frame. It is good idea, but it is very hard to read the content because of too small frame.

For voice comannd, it doesn't support the customer POI well, and could not realise the customer destination name.

Moreover, 3970T doesn't support screen point pick up as new destination. I dislike it.

By the way, the assistant lane support and pic is very useful when I drive in big city, such as Sydney.

I just upload .wav voice alert to 3790T and it works. Laughing

But, icons still do not display on the screen. 3790T doesn't support icons very well.

I use the uploader to upload the following files into 3790T.
red_camera.wav
red_camera.bmp
red_camera.gpx

Moreover, you can zoom in the map by tapping screen twice; and set new location to go by pressing a point on the screen for a couple second until the new address display, then choose to go!

There are 2 folders regarding to the POI in the unit.

First one is under folder named by Garmin (Garmin/poi), this poi.gpi is provided by Garmin.

Second one is under folder which name is POI (POI/). All Custom POI will be uploaded into this folder.

Have noticed that the newer models have some of the old features removed, and prices coming down at same time. Confused

Have the same issue that bmp icons dont show on the screen for school zones. Icons for cameras are appearing though.

I have used the POI loader and have the files saved in the POI folder on the unit, also tried saving the the gpx and bmp files in the gpx folder on the unit.

Any thoughts?

I have used the .wav file rather than the mp3 file and also added the sox.exe to the default garmin dir and was able to get the spoken alerts.
Could not get the MP3's to work...
Here you can download Sox.

Post 3790t on a MAC

First up I am pretty delighted with the unit.
I have used Car GPS in rentals but this is the first one I have owned.
Reading through the comments I can see that there are features on other earlier models of Garmin and other brands that are missing for no apparent reason.
GOOD points: Double tapping a point on the map and hitting "GO" is a really strong point.
Voice Command is an excellent feature as the Thin Blue Line aka The Cops and Robbers are increasingly intolerant of any physical inputs unless the vehicle is welded to the curb with the keys out of the ignition.
There are a number of other good points but the real purpose of this post is to point out a serious shortcoming...IF YOU PLAN ON USING A MAC.
One issue is a possible game changer...a MAC computer as the at -home interface.
I have an iMac with OS Snow Leopard Version 10.6.4...the latest version.
I have a Garmin 3790t preloaded at purchase with Cyclops POI's.
I have the latest software update for the Garmin ...version 2.50
I downloaded the Garmin POI Loader for the Mac...the Web Updater/Communicator.
Attracted by the regular updates and member participation I signed up for the GPS Data Team Customer Only downloads (excellent !).
Sounds like I am all set....WRONG.
I struggled for nearly 2 weeks to get the GPS Data Team POI's onto the 3790t.
The POI Loader said successful but the new POI's would not appear.
The older Cyclops data remained and the GPS Data Team would not overwrite.
There is no way to edit/delete the pre-loaded Cyclops...ON THE MAC...you get an error message.
Attempting to remove all previous POI's through the POI Loader menu does not actually remove them.
Finally the penny dropped and I rescued the near 10 year old Windows XP Toshiba Laptop from storage (I had tried to sell it online for $50 !!!...no takers), downloaded and installed POI Loader and Garmin Communicator.
I was up and running in less than 10 minutes.
Editing or deleting the previous database....no problem.
Adding a new database....no problem.
Adding a Custom POI....no problem.
Dead easy...like this forum said.
This may be fixed in a software / firmware update , but at the moment it sucks on a Mac.

I have more feeling about 3790T by using it for a month, especially about its route. I think you probably have same feeling as me.

I find the new device always guides me out off main road and let me drive into school zone and living area block. There are a lot of roundabout and speed bump. I have already upgraded the latest firmware.

To explain that, please let me make a example.

Start point is A and destination point is B.

Normally, drive on main road 1, and then make a left turn on the main road 2 and straight way drive down to point B. Main road 1 and Main road 2 cross each other and become a 90 degree corner.

3790T will guide me to a short cut route which cut the corner of Main road 1 and 2, but it let me drive into living area, there are so many roundabout and speed bump.

This happens anywhere in my city (Melbourne, Australia). Whatever how I choose the faster time, economic fuel or shorter distance, route doesn't change at all.

I hope this can be fixed by next upgrade.

Think I will stay with the 765t until bugs are ironed out of the new model. After doing a comparison between 765 and 3790 on Garmin site, there are more features on last years model.

The 3790t is a great piece of hardware....no question.
But the software and firmware lets it down.
I also considered the much-loved 765 but the capacitive screen of the 3790 was the drawcard.
Map on 3790t (Brisbane is my only experience here) leaves a lot to be desired.
The DETOUR button is best ignored as it results in really weird...read stupid ...alternatives. Best to initiate turns to roughly parallel the original route and let it recalculate.
Hoping for updates to let this unit reach its potential.

Post Will not restart

I have just driven over 2,500 Km around southern WA, yesterday driving from Kalgoorlie to Perth Airport the unit (3790T) lost the maps twice. When I turned off to restart I had to wait 10- 20 mins to get it started again both times. The unit worked perfectly well all other times.
It was not hot and the unit felt "normal".
