Anyone knows the max size of Memory card in Garmin 255W? I have tried with two different 4 Gig cards without any success of downloading POI files
Is there a size limit?
Never had any problems with my 1 Gig card.
You should be safe with a 4gb. Put the chip into a memory card reader and make sure you can read it with your computer. Try reformatting the chip with your computer using the FAT32 format.
All else fails try a 2gb, but to be honest most hardware as of late (2009+) which uses microSD will allow 4gb at the least for HC cards, and most Garmin stuff which is new will use up to 16gb.
I've got a Nuvi 255 which is working fine with an 8GB card. I didn't have to do anything special, just put the card in, attached the GPS to the PC and loaded the maps. It took a few hours for the whole of Europe though...
1. Older device marked "SD" only recognizes memory cards up to 4GB. That is the max media size SD standard had defined back then. Rarely seen 4GB SD cards, max is usually 2GB.
2. Device marked "SDHC" recognizes SD and SDHC (max to 32GB) memory cards. You can use either SD or SDHC card in that device.
3. The newest "SDXC" is under the same rule, devices supporting SDXC will recognize SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards (max to 2TB).
Therefore, if a device is designed "SD" only (no SDHC), it will recognize SD memory card only. The max size is limited to 4GB. However, it would not recognize a "4GB SDHC" memory cards even it is within the size limit of SD.
There may be some devices made to support SDHC but did not claim so due to various reasons back then. Since 4GB SD card is hard to find, consider yourself lucky if you need more than 2GB space and you happen to have a device like that. However, device makers will not support the incompatibility, accessing error, or other device issues when using SDHC since they did not claim to be SDHC compatible.
Check device's manual and SD/SDHC/SDXC standards on the card to make sure they are compatible with each other.
I checked my Garmin GPS nuvi 260W and my friend's GPS Nuvi 255W, My 2GB card formatted with FAT and FAT 32 did not worked. Computer was trying to access the card and popups Autorun many times but no success. I tried to use tapes to increase the thickness of the card still no success. Card is working on in card reader. downloaded maps are also not be able to recognize in the card. Garmin looks total disaster for me. Never recommend this product who is charge 50 dollars for map update and new GPS in only 130$, still no guarantee that map will possible to load in so small built-in 2 GB memory or the GPS will support the 2GB RAM to update maps.
Hey guys
My friend has the Nuvi 255 and said that when he first got it that it was pre-loaded with the lower 48 states. Next he tells me he had to do a 'renewal'? Unclear what he meant by that but now he only has the southern regions and Garmin rep tells him he will have to buy an SD card. What's goin on here? Is it that his existing card won't hold a map of the entire country or what? Tonight he said, after the GPS told him to, that he downloaded map updates and he has yet to check and see if all the states came with the download....He's old so it's hard to understand him. Any ideas? Thank you
SDHCI 8GB Class 10 30MB/s memory card does not work
I tried to use SanDisc Ultra SDHCI 8GB Class 10 30MB/s memory card and it did not work in Nuvi 255W. Garmin Express updating software recognized the card buy was not able to write on it! It said SD card lock switch is locked when in reality it was not.
Then I tried to use CoreMicro SDHC 4GB Class 4 4MB/s memory card and it worked!
Garmin Express updating software told me that the Nuvi 255W maximum supported size of SD card is 8GB. And Garmin website specs that 255W supports SD cards. SDHC is a news version of SD card and not guaranteed to work in older SD reading devices so be careful SDHCI Class 10 card may not work.
I have tried my 8GB SanDisk Ultra SDHC 15mb/s card from factory default on my Garmin Nuvi 265W and didn't work. I then updated my firmware and found that the card worked. It could be possible that others experiencing SD card issues may need a firmware update.
