Do you happen to know how to actually notify Garmin of a route problem?
There is a main road near my home that will not be used when I do a route home. I've tried all settings. It just won't recognize the road unless there is absolutely no other way to get to a location.

Garmin use maps which are updated yearly, or every 4 months if you have lifetime updates paid for.

My impression is that Garmin forwards this stuff back to map makers, but as a user you get nothing for reporting it. Real cartographers always (ALWAYS) would sned you back a free update of your paper map next time they published one, as a courtesy for reporting errors to them. Garmin? Misses the point. One free update is a damned cheap way to get map errors reported by users.

In some locations, the base information is simply poor. In others (are you sitting down?) map makers place INTENTIONAL errors in their maps, so they can easily tell if someone has copied them. If your route takes a back road or a little-used one, that's usually where they put in intentional errors. And Garmin wouldn't know if that was the problem, only their vendor would. (i.e. NavTeq, who don't follow the old courtesies either.)

Pretty big statement, any proof ??
I have found MANY times that where new roads are being built, that there is occasionally a "dotted" track where new road is going, but you are not able to use the road on the gps when completed, UNTIL the maps are upgraded.
The 4 lifetime upgrades per year from Garmin go a long way to improving that situation, much better than a yearly update.

"Pretty big statement, any proof ?? "
Yes, I have the specific statement from DeLorme technical support AND OTHERS that errors I have reported are intentional and will not be updated on their maps, for that specific reason.
No, I didn't record the phone calls but I'm sure you can confirm it directly with different map vendors, since any "proof" I could provide to you could easily be forged.
You probably will not find intentional error on original government maps, unless you're using ones from the Soviet Union. Russian cartographers were among the finest in the world, but then the USSR started intentionally moving mountains, villages, lakes, rivers, all to make sure that invading armies (and especially the USAF) couldn't use the maps against them. That's also extensively documented history.

It sounds like the previous replys are missing the user's point. My take on the question is that the road is showing up on the Garmin unit, but that the software refuses to plot a route that uses it.

If that's the case, your best bet may be the simplest -- check your avoidance settings.

If your menu is like mine, try the following:
1. select Tools
2. select Settings
3. select Navigation
4. select Avoidances
5. now you can scroll through a menu of different types of roads and conditions that your unit may or may not be avoiding, and adjust the avoidance settings for these conditions. For example: if your Garmin thinks that road is a Toll Road, and is set to avoid Toll Roads, it will not plot a route on that road until you disable avoidance of Toll Roads.

Hope this helps....

Another possible reason why certain roads get avoided is that the expected driving speed difference between a main road and a minor road may not be enough to make up for the difference in distance. I've had this problem a lot - I've been routed through miles of back lanes because it's a couple of miles shorter than using the main road. It must assume I can drive 50mph along them when only 20mph is possible. I have the GPS set on shortest time journey.

This is fine in areas I know as I just ignore the GPS until it works out which road I want to use, but as I generally only use it when I don't know the area it's a bit of a pain!

I have noticed in a number of places where a road almost links 2 main roads, but there is a set of concrete bollards blocking it at one end the GPS will often direct me through the bollards - not helpful!

I used to think that well, the bollards are newer than the map, but no that isn't the case either and on one stretch of road the 'blockage' is where the road narrows to a metre wide footpath for about 10metres. The sides of the footpath are both MASSIVE blocks of solid granite (there is a large house on the smaller block). i.e. the road NEVER went through there!

This is a major complaint area with Garmin.
I have a 3790t...like it.
But I use the information as a guide only.
It gives some ridiculous routings.
So if my destination is completely unknown it will get me there but ....as I later find out....by a ridiculously circuitous routing which I later refine for future trips.
If you need to backtrack for example it is best to 180 and let it re-calculate.
Otherwise it takes you on some really stupid re-routings which can be many kilometres further.

I know you said you have tried all settings. I assume you have tried the "shortest route" versus "faster time".

I had many problems with my Garmin in Calgary area, but the reason for this is road works. For some reason, dezl 760 shows longer roads that are now, sometimes wants to take me off highway.

Have found routes to be odd at times..example heading to CT up I95. Garmin tells me to get off at an exit, routes me through the city for 4 blocks and then tells me to get back on I95 instead of just keeping me on the interstate. Should have a third setting to "stay on Interstates" quickest or shortest doesn't always do that. Learned to familiarize my self with the route I need to go before hand and ignore instructions when I know they or wrong...sort of defeats the purpose of having a GPS though.

I am having the same problem. It takes me off of a road and puts me back on. During this time I am in places I most likely should not have been. What is up with that? It gets confusing sometimes.

I have a similar problem in my new Garmin GPS. From my house to the main road is about 100metres. The Garmin attempts to take me on a 1 mile detour before I join the main road and have to drive back the mile on the main road passing the bottom of my street. OK, I can and do ignore it, but where will it take me when I don't know the area? I have tried Avoidances to block the route I don't want to take, but it wont work for me.

I have recently taken 2 long trips and of course don't know whether the route really was the fastest, but I got there. On the way back from the first trip it attempted to route me via a service area from a motorway and on the second tried to route me via a 10 mile diversion. I ignored both because I knew where I was going. The reason I changed from Tom Tom to Garmin was that in Spain last year the TT decided to route me through a long, cross country journey on narrow rural roads in the dark. OK, I got to the hotel, but the main highway passes right by the place I wanted to go. I intend to take both sat navs with me this year and compare the results. With regards to my missing road, it is shown on the map and I have driven over it regularly with the Sat nav operational, but the Garmin will not recognise it (the Tom Tom does) so I tried to get it on Base Camp with the same result (shown on the map, but not allowed on the Garmin). As someone said, you can ignore these little irritations, but that's not the point.
