GPS: Garmin nüvi® 1490T

Hi, I've just purchased a nuvi 1490T and struggling a bit to get it ready for a long road trip. This forum seems a life saver for anyone wanting to get the most out of their sat nav Smile

On the Garmin poi directory there are files like UKCyclopsSample.gpi and NordicsCyclopsSample.gpi etc but on the Tools\Settings\Proximity Points\Alerts-Change there is only 1 option: Garmin Safety Gamera.

Q1. In Germany safety camera info has to be off otherwise it's illegal even to have a sat nav in the car. How do I prove this if the countries are not listed and cannot be separately ticked?

I note that in the poi directory there are no German gpi files so I guess that means there aren't any safety camera data - correct? [why does it say "sample" - makes me think this is not the full files]

Q2 I created a series of country sub-directories with a set(s) of gpx, csv and bmp files. As stated elsewhere the POI loader creates one file. I moved this file from the PC to a SD card and the Garmin spotted these as Extras, but only showed then as a collective Custom POIs - again no option on the Garmin to see or to select on/off different countries. Have I done it correctly?

Q3 As the UK is mph and the rest of Europe kph then I ran PoiLoader at twice: UK (mph) and France (kph) each time renaming the file to get UK_Poi.gpi and France_Poi.gpi. I uploaded these to the Garmin SD card but when I go to Tools\Settings\Proximity Points\Alerts-Change I only see 2 choices: Garmin Safety Camera and Custom POIs. So contrary to what other posts say, there seem no point in having a series of folders and subfolders other than to separate kph and mph country data. Am I thinking right?

Q4 If I create my own UK_Poi.gpi etc. then will I have to deselect the Garmin Safety Camera to avoid double alerts?

Any would be appreciated before I start my trip. Many thanks. Sorry its a long post.

See this good tip how to use speed camera database in Germany:

Thanks Blizer. Hmm, what if the police officer says "show me your POI configuration - gotcha!"

I was planning to switch off all POI when I get to the border. I don't have any other POI, but if I did I would like to have those on. Seems no way of selecting or _showing_ this with the Garmin.

Thanks

I also have a 1490T so let me try to answer some of your queries:

Q1 ... Go to Tools, System, Proximity points, Change, and untick the safety camera alerts. That switches them all off including the German ones.
Q2 ... Well, you've done it one way, there is no really 'correct' way.

Q3 ... You should be able to see the different files when you look in Extras and select Custom POIs, you'll then be able to select either your UK POIs or France POIs, and search as you want, but as you've discovered they are combined in the Extras folder, so you either select Proximity points for all of them or none.

Q4 ... I guess by this you mean you've created or downloaded some UK POIs for safety cameras. If so then yes, you MAY get double alerts depending on whether locations are in both your database and the Garmin one, at least you'd have no excuse for missing it!
